Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walking a forest trail in Costa Rica, a visitor might be struck by the sight of an iridescent blue morpho butterfly fluttering ahead in the filtered daylight, or an enormous silk moth, as magnificently patterned and subtly colored as a Persian carpet, only emerging to fly at night. Elsewhere, vivid yellow and orange sulphur butterflies flock to puddles to sip the concentrated minerals. Such is the dazzling variety of the butterflies and moths unique to this region. Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen and Winifred Hallwachs in the forests of northwestern Costa Rica, 100 tropical butterflies and moths represent the diversity in large-format photographs by Jeffrey Miller that document the dizzying variety of shapes, colors, and markings. The photographs are accompanied by species accounts and images of the corresponding caterpillar. The authors recount these insects' feats of mimicry and migration, lift the veil on their courtship, and show how the new technology of DNA barcoding is changing the picture of Lepidopteran biodiversity. The authors also tell the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, a team of caterpillar collectors, and the participation of neighboring farming communities has deepened understanding of Costa Rica's Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biotechnology, and ecotourism development.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full-colour, superbly illustrated atlas presents the findings of Butterflies for the New Millennium, the most comprehensive survey of butterflies ever undertaken in Britain and Ireland. After five years of recording by thousands of volunteers, it provides an up-to-date assessment of our butterflies, the habitats they live in, the threats they face, and the major changes that have occurred since publication of the previous such atlas in 1984. The body of the book is taken up with species by species accounts, each accompanied by a full-page distribution map and colour photographs of the butterfly concerned. A wider context is provided by considering long-term trends in distribution, derived from 200 years of recording and recent changes elsewhere in Europe. In addition, the book summarises the wealth of new information about butterfly ecology, incorporates findings from the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, describes and illustrates the habitats favoured by particular communities of butterflies, and presents a vision of how these popular insects might be conserved in the future. As such, it will be invaluable to a wide range of readers, from amateur naturalists to professional conservationists and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty and informative account that busts the myths about Britain's most captivating butterfly species. A wondrous enigma, the Purple Emperor is our most elusive and least-known butterfly--we glimpse it only through fissures in its treetop world, yet this giant insect has fascinated us for centuries and has even inspired its own "Emperoring" language. Matthew Oates became captivated by the Purple Emperor following his first sighting as a boy. He has studied it assiduously ever since, devoting his life to trying to unravel the Emperor's secrets. His Imperial Majesty takes us on a journey, beginning with a dalliance into the bizarre history of our engagement with the butterfly, with daring doings and gross eccentricities from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Subsequent chapters explore all aspects of this remarkable butterfly's life cycle, including behaviour, habitat preferences, life history and conservation, all relayed in Matthew's unique, informative and witty style. Not so long ago, our knowledge of the Emperor was largely based on a blend of mythology and assumption. This book dispels the fabrications and reveals all about the Purple Emperor--the king of British butterflies.

Absolutely unputdownable!!!’ Bookworm86, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I blamed my son for the death of my daughter… Frail butterfly enthusiast Maggie Muir has lived a lonely life in her huge remote house on the Cornish cliffs for many years. Once a mother with two beautiful children, the sudden death of Maggie’s daughter, forever a little girl in her fairy nightdress, ripped the family apart and caused her son Lucas to flee to the other side of the world. But now Maggie is dying and there is something she needs her son to know. As Maggie grows increasingly frail, twenty-five-year-old Erin, who has fled London with a broken heart, arrives to take care of her. Maggie begs Erin to help her find Lucas, who now lives in a far-away place of searing heat and pearly sands. But when Erin tracks Lucas down, it quickly becomes clear that he is hiding something too. What really happened the night his sister died, when a little boy with freckles on his nose made a terrible mistake? And if Erin untangles the web of deceit between mother and son, does she risk learning something unforgiveable about the person she has come to love very deeply?
