Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kimberley Craton of Western Australia was subjected to rifting in the Paleoproterozoic along the North Australian Craton margin followed by plate collision that formed the Diamantina Craton as part of Nuna. An intra-oceanic arc accreted to the continent which collided with the craton. Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic basins formed during the breakup of Rodinia. Neoproterozoic through Cambrian time formed basins across the Kimberley. The King Leopold uplift, thermal subsidence, and Devonian reef complexes were deposited. The Halls Creek and Alice Springs uplifts followed. Triassic and later Mesozoic cover sequences formed a veneer over these basins. Chapter 1 introduces the geology of the Kimberley Craton. Chapter 2 presents the geology of the Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range. Chapter 3 offers a field excursion through the Spring Creek Track of the western part of the national park. Chapter 4 offers daily trip suggestions ranging from single day to an unlimited tour excursion. Chapter 5 presents geologic descriptions of national park features around the Bungle Bungles.

Book excerpt: Coordinating our use of the earth's natural resources is not easy. Resource users are many, their goals diverse, and their impacts on the environment often uncertain. How we use those resources depends on the signals and incentives we receive, from either the market or our governments. These systems encourage certain uses of natural resources, but they are not perfect. We harm the environment not out of malice, but because we do not know the consequences of our actions, or the incentives for harm are too great to ignore. Economics and the Environment argues that, by lowering the cost and improving the quality of the necessary signals and incentives, we can better reconcile our diverse interests in the environment. It introduces an economic way of thinking about environmental issues, without assuming a background in economics: * how the economy and the environment interact * how resource use is coordinated in ideal market and planned economies * the barriers to ideal signalling and incentives in real markets and real government planning * the economist's tools for dealing with natural resource issues * the uncertainty and complexity of environmental issues: climate change, water rights, air pollution and overharvesting of common resources. This second edition of Economics and the Environment is fully updated and includes new material on sustainability, valuation of environmental changes, the prospects for international cooperation under the Kyoto Protocol and the problems of defining and enforcing measures to protect biodiversity. It offers students in both economics and environmental studies programs a coherent framework for understanding our major environmental problems. 'Ian Wills succeeds in providing a fresh perspective . . . a very interesting and informative textbook.' Economic Record

Book excerpt: One of the earth's wildest regions, the Kimberley covers the vast northwest corner of Australia. It is a world of worn and colorful ranges, spectacular gorges, vast plains, strange trees, lush waterholes and great rivers that flow only for a few months of the year. Many people firmly believe the Kimberley to be the most exciting place in Australia. Indeed, those who know the area intimately may tell you that no other part of the continent can match its beauty and grandeur. Jocelyn Burt's striking photographs, coupled with stories of her travel experiences, evoke the atmosphere of a landscape whose scale and splendor has the power to enchant, humble and inspire those who enter it. The inclusion of lyrical poetry by Neroli Roberts adds a further dimension to the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As very few studies on geomorphological aspects of sandstones exist, this book demonstrates the significance of landforming processes from geological, geochemical and dynamic points of view. The worldwide examples include classic areas of sandstone research such as the Colorado Plateau, Saxony, France and England, but also emphasize the sandstone lands of the southern hemisphere. The authors give evidence for climatic influences on sandstone landforms, taking into account geochemical weathering processes and detailed comparative studies, and a new classification based on structural and tectonic settings is outlined. This comprehensive study, including modern techniques, can be recommended not only to geomorphologists but also to sedimentologists and hydrologists.
