Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was his survival of a near fatal head-on collision in 1940 that turned Elkan Kemps life around. After crossing the threshold of death twice while hospitalized, he gained a new perspective on life and on death, as well. During his six years in the Air Corps, he met his dream-girl while at Pearl Harbor, and they were married. Elkan Kemp began his college education in 1946 at the University of Iowa. There he obtained both a BA and an MA degree, with majors in Sociology and Religion. It was during this time that his interests included in-depth studies of the Old Testament under Rabbi Judah Goldin. He studied religion under Dr. Marcus Bach and Theology under several Jesuit priests. He learned five dialects in Greek and received honors in Phi Eta Sigma, Eta Sigma Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Reverend Kemps religious studies at the University of Iowa led him to three years of graduate work at the San Francisco Theological Seminary which included research in Greek and advanced Hebrew. He also went on to earn a divinity degree and a Seminary Fellowship for study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His experience at the University of Edinburgh led him to more advanced work in Hebrew and extensive studies of the Muslim religion. With a Ph.D. thesis entitled, Life, Death and What Comes After, Elkan Kemps education now led him to his lifelong devotion to pastoral work. After teaching from the Bible for more than 60 years, Reverend Kemp became aware of just how many thinking people have been frustrated by the walls of religious myth, legend, creed and dogma that the churches and synagogues have erected. His decision to write this book came out of a desire to ease those frustrations by helping people to break down those walls. There was a practical side to his effort. He sat with many deeply religious laymen and ministers who came to that event we call death, with great anxiety. Reverend Kemp believes that it is evident that the Judaeo-Christian religion is not working, for those walls require a hand-me-down religion and this does not work. Reverend Kemp states, We truly believe only what we know about our God first hand. I hope, with this book, people will be able to find that experience and to have a full life, and then come to death with a firm, happy confidence . . . not just a vague hope.

Book excerpt: Over the last thirty years, abortion has touched literally every extended family. The resulting trauma has resulted in broken relationships, substance abuse, self-destructive behavior, eating disorders, patenting problems, alienation from God, and more. Most of the 50 million American women and men who have had abortions are haunted by their experience. But there is no socially acceptable outlet for expressing this forbidden grief. So they bottle up their feelings -- or explode.Forbidden Grief lifts the veil of secrecy shrouding abortion's devastating impact on the emotional and spiritual health of women, men, and their families. Through first-hand accounts and insightful analysis it reveals the many ways in which memories of a past abortion intrude into women's daily lives. Readers will also learn the inside story of the post-abortion syndrome cover-up and the related political controversy. This gripping, unforgettable book reveals the secrets that post-abortive women only tell their therapists -- but want everyone to understand.Forbidden Grief addresses the need of tens of millions of women, family members, and friends who want to know how abortion has affected them or their loved ones. And most importantly, it describes, in a Christian context, the path to healing and peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in 1957, Jericho Walls is an unforgettable and inspiring novel about the power of friendship for a young girl growing up amid racism. "I woke early that first Sunday in Jericho. The sun was barely a stain in the sky, but the air was hot and clammy. My nightgown stuck to my skin. I padded to the bathroom and splashed my face with cold water. My stomach clenched in a queasy ball . . . I'd keep myself out of trouble in Jericho, I promised myself. I'd do all the right things and make lots of good friends and no one would care a whit about my being a preacher's daughter." Jo Clawson isn't the boy her father wanted, and she's not the "young lady" her neighbors expect of the preacher's daughter, either. But even though Jo doesn't always meet the expectations of the people around her, she still longs to fit in. When she and her family leave their northern home for the small southern town of Jericho, Alabama, Jo might finally stop picking fights and settle in right. But when Jo befriends a young black boy, she discovers that "fitting in" is about a lot more than proper manners or a smart outfit. Suddenly she's faced with a new set of questions that call up her own values. Maybe some fights are worth picking, after all.

Book excerpt: "Lawyer Ralph Merritt buys a house in a white neighborhood bordering Harlem. In their reactions to Merrit and to one another, Fisher's characters—including the prejudiced Miss Cramp, who "takes on causes the way sticky tape picks up lint," Merrit's housekeeper Linda, and Shine, his piano mover—provide an invaluable view of the social and philosophical milieu of the times. Thematically, Fisher focuses on the idea of black unity and the discovery of the self. The biblical tale of Joshua is evoked to illustrate his concern for the black person's search for a "true nature." it is in this spiritual battle that the divergent segments of Harlem are drawn together in order to battle the "establishment" inside the walls of Jericho"--Publisher's description (a later edition).
