Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Brazilian scholars have collected and studied folklore since the second half of the nineteenth century, their work has gone largely unnoticed by folklorists working in other parts of the world. With the exception of anthropologists who occasionally study the folk literature of indigenous peoples in Brazil, few foreigners are familiar with, or even aware of, the kinds of folklore studies that have been undertaken in that country. This work, first published in 1994, aims to characterize the nature of Brazilian narrative studies and trends; to discuss and assess the roots of the apparent preoccupations, approaches and objectives of traditional narrative scholarship in Brazil; to examine Brazilian folklore scholarship in light of Euro-American research; and to point out the results and accomplishments of Brazilian research while simultaneously indicating possibilities for new directions in research.

Book excerpt: This collection, first published in 1969, presents essays written by twenty of the most eminent scholars from the British Isles and Europe on aspects of folk life studies. The essays are written in honour of Dr Iorwerth C. Peate, Curator of the Welsh Folk Museum and doyen of folk life studies in Britain, to mark his retirement as the first President of the Society for Folk Life Studies. In the present book all the various aspects of folk life, from linguistics to sociology, from architecture to agrarian history, are covered, reflecting the wide interests of Dr Peate and his valuable contribution to the development of the study of traditional life in Britain.

Book excerpt: Reservoir Characterization is a collection of papers presented at the Reservoir Characterization Technical Conference, held at the Westin Hotel-Galleria in Dallas on April 29-May 1, 1985. Conference held April 29-May 1, 1985, at the Westin Hotel—Galleria in Dallas. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively assigning reservoir properties, recognizing geologic information and uncertainties in spatial variability. This book contains 19 chapters, and begins with the geological characterization of sandstone reservoir, followed by the geological prediction of shale distribution within the Prudhoe Bay field. The subsequent chapters are devoted to determination of reservoir properties, such as porosity, mineral occurrence, and permeability variation estimation. The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. This topic is followed by papers concerning reservoir simulation, parameter assignment, and method of calculation of wetting phase relative permeability. This text also deals with the role of discontinuous vertical flow barriers in reservoir engineering. The last chapters focus on the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on oil reservoir. Petroleum engineers, scientists, and researchers will find this book of great value.

Book excerpt: This handbook introduces key elements of the philological research area called paremiology (the study of proverbs). It presents the main subject area as well as the current status of paremiological research. The basic notions, among others, include defining proverbs, main proverb features, origin, collecting and categorization of proverbs. Each chapter is written by a leading scholar-specialist in their area of proverbial research. Since the book represents a measured balance between the popular and scientific approach, it is recommended to a wide readership including experienced and budding scholars, students of linguistics, as well as other professionals interested in the study of proverbs.

Book excerpt: Points of view from different continents of the globe tell of the dynamics of identity in contexts that have struggled historically to find a pattern in which a land and a community can recognize themselves, to identify a codex marked by collective memory and common historical, sociological, and even psychological features. Today, this search for signs of belonging represents an experience of unprecedented urgency, taking place in an international landscape laden with appropriations, cultural influences, and hybridization that are spontaneous and not necessarily sought after, and that are perhaps due to commercial opportunism or to the unstable, fluid reality of the digital world.??Valentina Gensini 0Is it still possible to speak about identity in a strongly globalized context, marked by uprooting, mobility and migration? The re-emergence of nationalism reveals a new urgency concerning the sense of belonging that contradicts existing cultural hybridization. The international seminar and exhibition cycle, held at Le Murate. Progetti Arte Contemporanea in Florence in 2018, aimed to provide insights, analysis and reflections about global identity dynamics, with particular attention to cultural production, the hybridization of languages and postcolonial narratives. The publication is a collection of the essays and lectures by the speakers who took part in this crucial artistic and cultural event.
