Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boy Life and Self-Government The best excuse for this book is probably the fact that its publication is requested by the International Committee of the Young Men's Christian Associations. It is given to the press, not as the last word on the boy problem, but simply to add another handbook to the working library of boy lovers and boy leaders, with such suggestiveness as it may offer them for their own better counsel. In its original form the manuscript was prepared as a course of lectures on the assigned subject "The Principles of Self-government Among Older Boys." These lectures were given in August, 1909, at the annual Y.M.C.A. Institute at Silver Bay, Lake George, New York, before the advanced Boys' Work and County Work Secretaries. The closing chapters on The Boy's Religion and The Boy's Home have been added at the request of the International Committee. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the contentious and topical issue of aboriginal self-government over child welfare. Using case studies from Australia and Canada, it discusses aboriginal child welfare in historical and comparative perspectives and critically examines recent legal reforms and changes in the design, management and delivery of child welfare services aimed at securing the 'decolonization' of aboriginal children and families. Within this context, the author identifies the limitations of reconciling the conflicting demands of self-determination and sovereignty and suggests that international law can provide more nuanced and culturally sensitive solutions. Referring to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is argued that the effective decolonization of aboriginal child welfare requires a journey well beyond the single issue of child welfare to the heart of the debate over self-government, self-determination and sovereignty in both national and international law.
