Book excerpt: This book aims at providing algorithms for balance control of legged, torque-controlled humanoid robots. A humanoid robot normally uses the feet for locomotion. This paradigm is extended by addressing the challenge of multi-contact balancing, which allows a humanoid robot to exploit an arbitrary number of contacts for support. Using multiple contacts increases the size of the support polygon, which in turn leads to an increased robustness of the stance and to an increased kinematic workspace of the robot. Both are important features for facilitating a transition of humanoid robots from research laboratories to real-world applications, where they are confronted with multiple challenging scenarios, such as climbing stairs and ladders, traversing debris, handling heavy loads, or working in confined spaces. The distribution of forces and torques among the multiple contacts is a challenging aspect of the problem, which arises from the closed kinematic chain given by the robot and its environment.

Book excerpt: A self-help manual focusing on back pain prevention and rehabilitation using the unique Pilates body conditioning system 3 in 5 of us will suffer from backache in our lives. In order to mitigate against the worst-case scenario, use Pilates to strengthen your back and also the supporting muscles so that it doesn't take all the strain. Pilates has a strong reputation in tackling back problems and many doctors, osteopaths and physiotherapists are already endorsing its unique quality to exercise deeply but gently and to rebalance the posture (many are opening Pilates centres in their surgeries). The Back Book is a one-stop reference guide, explaining how the back works, why backache occurs, the different types of back pain, when to seek professional help, lifestyle tips for prevention and exercises to promote flexibility and hold the correct posture. For those already suffering, a special remedial programme of exercises is designed to restore mobility. With brand new exercises and the expertise of Paul Massey, Chief Physiotherapist to Britain's Olympic Swimming team, leading Pilates practitioner Lynne Robinson can help you bypass or overcome this most common of agonies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easily can be proved that the human brain equipped sense organs can work as an universal measuring tool, and measure with sufficient accuracy after some training not only a distance, mass or volume, but and parameters of important personal functions. Unfortunately, this instrument does not have an indicator device (panel) and results of measurements usually hidden in the depth of subconscious part of mind. To extract these results of measurements, at first, is needed to find an access code for this information, secondly, to deduce this information in a convenient for perception form, and after that to decipher it. Based on this approach a new method of direct measurement of intellectual parameters was used for appraisal such characteristics of intellect and mind as creativity, intuition, willpower, stress level, vital energy index, etc. Verification of the accuracy of measurement of some bio-physical parameters measured by the same method (for example number of thrombocytes in the blood) is carried out by comparison with laboratory blood tests. Research and physical measurements of a person's intellectual abilities have shown that they can change significantly from the influence of many external factors and, first of all, of light, electromagnetic and sound perceptions of the senses, both for the better and for the worse. This allows significantly increasing the capabilities and expanding the range of use of any entrainment technology. Using algorithms of multi-parameter optimization, the method allows increasing the level of intellect and its components in several times practically for everyone. Measurement of willpower and stress opens the prospect for many people to maintain their health and activity at the proper level throughout life. In the book are collected also some rules and methods allowing to support intellectual abilities of the mind on an optimum level by means of mindset management, control of the subconscious mind, cognitive control, and control emotions. Method of measurement of intellectual abilities and compatibility of team members can be used in process of the hiring, searching a bride, etc.

Book excerpt: This book will help you assess and treat patients with neurological impairment resulting in dysfunctional or abnormal muscle tone. The material concentrates on achieving upper extremity function for personal autonomy. Because the upper extremities work in synchrony with the rest of the body, the text covers significant aspects of whole body movement as well. Thus, though the book is written by an occupational therapist, physical therapists and speech pathologists will find the information applicable to gait and respiration. This information can be applied to patients of any age or size. The illustrations alternate the use of small and large bodies, so one can generalize visualizations. The intervention strategies presented reflect a strong neurodevelopmental treatment orientation. However, the analysis of component parts of movement and the review of significant aspects of normal and abnormal development have evolved from the integration of anatomical and kinesiological perspectives. Our kinesiology illustrations are intended to help you visualize the position of the muscle and the related skeletal parts. As one provides treatment, these visual images will guide the location and direction of touch.

This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "neuromechanics" defines an integrative approach that combines the neuromuscular control and the biomechanical aspects of physical behavior in humans and animals. Crucial to this approach is a detailed description and modeling of the interaction between the nervous system and the controlled biomechanical plant. Only then do we have the broader context within which to understand evolution, movement mechanics, neural control, energetics, disability and rehabilitation. In addition to enabling new basic science directions, understanding the interrelations between movement neural and mechanical function should also be leveraged for the development of personalized wearable technologies to augment or restore the motor capabilities of healthy or impaired individuals. Similarly, this understanding will empower us to revisit current approaches to the design and control of robotic and humanoid systems to produce truly versatile human-like physical behavior and adaptation in real-world environments. This Research Topic is therefore poised at an opportune moment to promote understanding of apparently disparate topics into a coherent focus.
