Book excerpt: Into every life comes the bittersweet mixture of life and death, joy and sorrow, hope and despair. What makes the difference between a happy life and a miserable existence is not the ratio between good and bad, but one's determination to cling to the good in spite of the bad. Growing up in northeastern North Carolina, John Luton marveled as his father told stories about his childhood and World War II adventures. Bluebird in Belgium relates many of those wonderful stories. Bluebird in Belgium is a heartwarming tale of childhood innocence, the love of family, and a search for meaningful existence during war and peace. It is also a tale of joyful encounters, painful separations, and the miracle of memory. Follow the Bluebird on a journey leading from the sweet potato fields of North Carolina to the desert sands of North Africa and snowy hills of Belgium. Discover the answer to the question that will not let him go: In the end, is life worth the struggle?

In order to discover the elusive bluebird of happiness, two kids named Tyltyl and Mytyl are set on a magical journey. A distinct stage of their trip is represented by each of the play's six acts. The fairy Bérylune pays the kids a visit in Act I and assigns them the task of locating the bluebird of happiness. They go on their trip with their dog in Act II, stopping in the Land of Memory along the way to get a glimpse of their history. They visit the Land of the Future in Act III, where they may glimpse what their futures could hold. They meet their departed grandparents as they go to the Realm of the Dead in Act IV. They are led to the Palace of Night in Act V, where they encounter the blue bird's soul. The children come home with the bluebird in Act VI's concluding scene, which they find out has been with them the whole time. The symbolist drama examines issues of human nature, happiness, and the unanswered questions of life and death.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. The main themes in his work are death and the meaning of life. He had written poems and short novels during his studies. In 1889, he became famous overnight after his first play, La Princesse Maleine, had received enthusiastic praise from Octave Mirbeau, the literary critic of Le Figaro (1890). In the following years, he wrote a series of symbolist plays characterized by fatalism and mysticism, most importantly The Intruder (1890), The Blind (1890) and Pélléas and Mélisande (1892). With the play Aglavaine et Sélysette he began to create characters, especially female characters, more in control of their destinies. After that he published his Douze Chansons (1896), Treasure of the Humble (1896), The Life of the Bee (1901), and Ariadne and Bluebeard (1902). In 1903, Maeterlinck received the Triennial Prize for Dramatic Literature from the Belgian government. His other works include Wisdom and Destiny (1898), and The Wrack of the Storm (1916).
