Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading players and outstanding matches of two thrilling decades in tennis history From Rod Laver’s amateur Grand Slam in 1962 to the first US Open held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, legendary sportswriter Herbert Warren Wind captures the grace and drama of modern tennis in this brilliant collection drawn from the pages of the New Yorker. The era’s biggest names, including Margaret Court, Chris Evert, John Newcombe, Arthur Ashe, and Pancho Gonzales, thrill the crowds of Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and Forest Hills, and America’s Davis Cup team battles patriotic linesmen and frenzied fans in an epic showdown against the Romanians in Bucharest. In “Mrs. King versus Mr. Riggs,” Wind paints a witty and evocative portrait of Billy Jean King’s historic beatdown of Bobby Riggs, and in “Forest Hills and the Final Between Connors and Borg,” he vividly recounts one of the wildest and woolliest tournaments in the sport’s history. Rendered with the same authority and eloquence that led the New York Times to declare Wind the dean of American golf writers, these dispatches from center court testify to the celebrated journalist’s passion and versatility.

Todd Palmer was a knock-around guy who happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. He pulled fast-track banker Jay Rigges out of a tight spot at a strippers' bar and found himself sitting pretty, in Jay's mansion. He also found Melany—Jay's exotic, erotic, rich-girl wife—and a life-style filled with speedy red Porsches, deep-blue swimming pools, and fat white lines of coke. Todd knew something crooked had to be going on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MS.406 was an important aircraft not only because it was built in larger numbers than any other French fighter of the period, but also because it was the first modern fighter in the Armée de l'Air inventory. Although comparable to the British Hurricane and early models of the German Bf 109, it was outclassed when flown against the more powerful, and faster, Bf 109E. With little or no protection (no armour or self-sealing tanks), the MS.406 sustained heavy losses during the Battle of France. Too lightly armed, and fitted with unreliable weaponry, the French fighter struggled to down German bombers. It therefore comes as no surprise that only a dozen French pilots became fully fledged aces on the type during this period, despite the aircraft being present in significant numbers. However a score of pilots, who bagged their very first kills at the controls of the MS.406, fought on after the fall of France, flying Dewoitine D.520s, Spitfires and even Soviet Yak-3s to attain ace status against both Allied and Axis opponents.
