Book excerpt: Kazimir Malevich’s painting Black Square is one of the twentieth century's emblematic paintings, the visual manifestation of a new period in world artistic culture at its inception. None of Malevich’s contemporary revolutionaries created a manifesto, an emblem, as capacious and in its own way unique as this work; it became both the quintessence of the Russian avant-gardist's own art—which he called Suprematism—and a milestone on the highway of world art. Writing about this single painting, Aleksandra Shatskikh sheds new light on Malevich, the Suprematist movement, and the Russian avant-garde. Malevich devoted his entire life to explicating Black Square's meanings. This process engendered a great legacy: the original abstract movement in painting and its theoretical grounding; philosophical treatises; architectural models; new art pedagogy; innovative approaches to theater, music, and poetry; and the creation of a new visual environment through the introduction of decorative applied designs. All of this together spoke to the tremendous potential for innovative shape and thought formation concentrated in Black Square. To this day, many circumstances and events of the origins of Suprematism have remained obscure and have sprouted arbitrary interpretations and fictions. Close study of archival materials and testimonies of contemporaries synchronous to the events described has allowed this author to establish the true genesis of Suprematism and its principal painting.

Book excerpt: ‘When I first lived in Ukraine, I was preoccupied with its ideas of the past and future. Once Maidan started, there was nothing but the present; every hour held the possibility of transformation, and of terrible violence...’ After leaving university in 2004, Sophie Pinkham moved to Siberia to volunteer for the Red Cross, tackling the rising AIDS crisis by folding origami tulips. Over the next decade, she travelled and worked across the post-Soviet world, from Lake Baikal to the Black Sea, at a time when the young countries of the region were struggling to define their new identities. Black Square is a multidimensional portrait of a period of tumultuous change, and of a generation that came of age after the fall of the USSR, only to see protestors shot on Kiev’s main square, Crimea annexed by Russia, and a bitter war in eastern Ukraine. We meet a charismatic doctor fighting the AIDS epidemic even as he struggles with his own drug addiction; an iconoclastic artist with a penchant for public nudity; and a Russian-Jewish clarinettist agitating for Ukrainian liberation. With a deep knowledge of the literature and legends of the region, and a keen outsider’s eye for the dark absurdities of post-Soviet society, Black Square delivers an indelible impression of a region, and a world, on the brink.

Book excerpt: Malevich's Black Square heralded the triumph of non-objectivity, when there was nothing left to destroy in the figurative form and the object lost its materiality. This canvas, shown at the "Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0.10" in Petrograd in December 1915, embodied its creator's conception of "the zero of form", the beginning and the end of everything. The artist repeated the famous composition, which undoubtedly became an icon of 20th century painting. The Hermitage has a version dated ca. 1930, it was formerly kept in the collection of the Malevich family.

Book excerpt: Malevichs Black Square is perhaps the most iconic of modern paintings and in my mind and unthinkable without Russian iconographic painting. It is a zero point in Malevichs own words, the point or nothing which is not nothing but where everything is possible. It is a deeply spiritual painting to me. The first Black Square appears in 1915. At the Suprematist Exhibition the Black Square is placed diagonally to the corner, opening it. Already then, the Black Square does not want to be square and moves towards the infinite, it is in my mind the most cosmic painting of Modernity. To me it reaches for the universe, it is the universe. This little book then is an hommage to Malevichs Black Square, it is a series of written and painted reflections on the endless potential and joy of this great painting close to my heart. Gabrielle von Bernstorff-Nahat is an architect, painter and poet. Among her most recent publications are the Nature Works Series as well as The Sound of Herats in Blue and Mary A Rhapsody in Blue. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds a new vision of the development of Russian revolutionary culture, bringing together fiction, criticism, utopian projects, manifestos, performance and film theory, religious philosophy, and the imaginary space of communism centered around the Mummy of Lenin. Revolution and modernization are two main issues of the book. The author argues that in Modernism the work of art was conceived as a miniature of the world to come; thus, art was meant to make projects, not master-pieces. He analyzes the genre of the manifesto as a special rhetorical device of modernist discourse and shows how projects of biological and social engineering elaborate a vision of a future human type apt to exist under unprecedented conditions. Red Square, Black Square traces the process of totalitarian reduction of the modernist impulse into a rigid party doctrine. It follows the turbulent development of Russian Modernism through its categorical arrest under the official doctrine of "socialist realism." Moscow's Red Square is examined as a primal communist space that manifests the symbolism of power. Viewing communism as an aesthetically, not economically, motivated society, the book enacts "political aesthetics" as a discipline that provides the fundamental tool for an adequate and thorough understanding of communism. Todorov concludes by discussing the rise of nationalism in Eastern Europe as a post-communist condition, and the new mission of the intellectuals.

Book excerpt: Exploring how the universal visual language of geometric abstraction was influenced by different societies, this volume also demonstrates how the movement's revolutionary aesthetic continues to impact culture around the globe. It traces a century of abstract art from 1915 to the present day, celebrating the accomplishments of both men and women and includes sculpture, film, photography and painting. Organised around four distinct themes - communication, architectonics, utopia and everyday life - the book presents a chronological survey from Russia to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central America, Africa, South America, and the US. Each of the 100 works is featured in double-page spreads with brief artist biographies. Essays by Tanya Barson, Briony Fer, Tom McDonough, and Joshua Jiang, contextualize the various geographic and aesthetic stages of the development of geometric abstraction.

Book excerpt: May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier--and investigating them got a whole lot harder. Escorted by national guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, twenty years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.
