Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Women and Modern China presents a social history of women pioneers in Chinese Protestantism from the 1880s to the 2010s. The author interrupts a hegemonic framework of historical narratives by exploring formal institutions and rules as well as social networks and social norms that shape the lived experiences of women. This book achieves a more nuanced understanding about the interplays of Christianity, gender, power and modern Chinese history. It reintroduces Chinese Christian women pioneers not only to women’s history and the history of Chinese Christianity, but also to the history of global Christian mission and the global history of many modern professions, such as medicine, education, literature, music, charity, journalism, and literature.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first monograph-length study of the relationship between Protestant Bible translation and the development of Mandarin from a lingua franca into the national language of China. Drawing on both published and unpublished sources, this book looks into the translation, publication, circulation and use of the Mandarin Bible in late Qing and Republican China, and sets out how the Mandarin Bible contributed to the standardization and enrichment of Mandarin. It also illustrates that the Mandarin Union Version, published in 1919, was involved in promoting Mandarin as not only the standard medium of communication but also a marker of national identity among the Chinese people, thus playing a role in the nation-building of modern China.

Book excerpt: This edited volume starts from the perspectives of Beijing in how it sees that religion should serve the interests of the state. From China’s viewpoint, religion should act as a stabilizing force of society, or else the Christian Churches will lose their reason for existence. This might be incomprehensible to Western Christians, who believe in the freedom of religion and their right to embrace their faith. This collection of articles represents the concerted efforts of Chinese, Italians, and an American—who live in China, Europe, and the United States and belong to different disciplines, such as History, Religious Studies, and Language Studies—to promote a better understanding of the Catholic Church in the world and in China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study that is largely intellectual history, Cao Jian observes how Old Testament motifs were introduced by Protestant missionaries and Bible translators, with the help of Chinese co-workers in the beginning, and how those motifs drew attention from local converts and led to discussions among them in light of the norms in Confucianism. Then, Cao demonstrates how Confucian reformists started reacting to missionary publications and showing interest in Old Testament motifs. After the defeat of China in 1894–1895 in the Sino-Japanese War, the response to the Old Testament became more active and influential among China's population. The author shows new interests and tendencies in Old Testament interpretation among educated Chinese with various political ideals at a time of national crisis. He also demonstrates how the vernacular movement in Bible translating and missionary Old Testament education popularized and modernized Old Testament reading and studies in Chinese society. After that transitional period, discussions of Old Testament motifs became even more abundant and diverse. The author concentrates on those regarding the notion of God and monotheism. In China’s nationalism, the Old Testament proved no less stimulating. The author deals with Moses and the prophets to understand how they became valid to those active in both religious and secular realms.

Book excerpt: China is poised to play a most significant role in the third millennium. This authoritative history by Dr Broomhall traces the influence of Protestant and Catholic missions and the work of the United Bible Societies during the nineteenth century on the development of modern-day China. Whereas previous historians in this field had worked mainly from secondary sources, Dr Boomhall drew on the first-hand observations, most significantly by his great uncle, James Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, who was described by the historian K.S. Latourette as ?one of the four or five most influential foreigners who came to China in the mid-nineteenth century?.Dr J.A. Broomhall (1911-1994) worked as a missionary doctor among the Nosu in southwest China and the Mangyan in the Phillipines. His devotion to the Nosu is epitomized in the fact that just hours before he died he received news that the provincial government in his beloved Nosuland had just given permission for the agency Medical Services International to work there - it was as if he had been waiting to hear that before he could ?depart in peace?. Dr Broomhall?s other books are Strong Tower (1947), Strong Man?s Prey (1953) on his work among the Nosu, Fields for Reaping (1954) on his work in the Philippines, and Time for Action (1965).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length monograph on the history of the translation of the Bible into Chinese, this book tells a fascinating story beginning with Western missionaries working closely with Chinese assistants. They struggled for one hundred years to produce a version that would meet the needs of a growing Chinese church, succeeding in 1919 with publication of the Chinese Union Version (CUV). Celebrating the CUV’s centennial, this volume explores the uniqueness and contemporary challenges in the context of the history of Chinese Bible translation, a topic that is attracting more and more attention. Peng’s experiences give her a unique perspective and several advantages in conducting this research. Like the majority of readers of the CUV, she grew up in mainland China. When Chinese Christians went through severe political and economic ordeals, she was there to witness the CUV comforting those who were suffering under persecution. She has participated in Chinese Bible revision under the United Bible Societies. She was also director of the Commission on Bible Publication at the China Christian Council and chief editor of the CUV concise annotated version (1998).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Slovakian literary comparatist and Sinologist Marian Galik was one of the first scholars to point out the importance of the Christian Bible as a source for secular writing in China. In his Selected Studies, Galik provides a panoramic view of the Bible's function in twentieth-century Chinese fiction, drama, and poetry. He analyses the different ways in which authors, such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Bing Xin, Gu Cheng, and Wang Meng, have appropriated the biblical text. Other themes include recent studies by Chinese scholars on the Bible and comparisons of Chinese translations of biblical texts, namely, the Psalms. Galik focuses on questions of intertextuality and demonstrates his faith in the possibility of interreligious and intercultural understanding. The collection of Galik s essays is a goldmine in terms of its richness of information, inspiring comments and stimulating ideas regarding the influence of the Bible on Chinese literature in the past two centuries.
