Book excerpt: Bayard Taylor (January 11, 1825 - December 19, 1878) was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. Taylor was born on January 11, 1825, in Kennett Square in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth son, the first to survive to maturity, of the Quaker couple, Joseph and Rebecca (née Way) Taylor. His father was a wealthy farmer. Bayard received his early instruction in an academy at West Chester, Pennsylvania, and later at nearby Unionville. At the age of seventeen, he was apprenticed to a printer in West Chester. The influential critic and editor Rufus Wilmot Griswold encouraged him to write poetry. The volume that resulted, Ximena, or the Battle of the Sierra Morena, and other Poems, was published in 1844 and dedicated to Griswold.

It presented a special attachment between two men and discussed the nature and significance of such a relationship, romantic but not sexual. Critics are divided in interpreting Taylor's novel as a political argument for gay relationships or an idealization of male spirituality. The title page carries a quote from Shakespeare's sonnets, Number 144 "Two loves I have of comfort and despair" The better angel is a man right fair;The worser spirit a woman colour'd ill. Joseph Aster, a young farmer in his twenties, marries Julia Blessing, a wealthy woman. While returning from a visit to her father, he is involved in a train crash, and in consequence meets Philip Held, who becomes his somewhat older and more worldly friend. As the story progresses, Joseph comes to recognize his wife's manipulative nature and begins to develop a reciprocated romantic attachment to Philip. This is evidenced in Philip's profession of love and "a man's perfect friendship".

A little volume, published at Philadelphia in 1844 under the title Ximena; or, The Battle of the Sierra Morena and other Poems, brought its author a little cash; and indirectly it did him better service as the means of his introduction to The New York Tribune. With the money and an advance made to him on account of some journalistic work to be done in Europe, he set sail for the East. The graphic accounts which he sent from Europe to The New York Tribune, The Saturday Evening Post, and The United States Gazette were so highly appreciated that on Taylor's return to America he was advised to throw his articles into book form. In 1846 appeared his Views A-Foot; or, Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff. In 1851, he travelled to Egypt and towards the end of 1852; he sailed for Calcutta, proceeding thence to China, where he joined the expedition of Commodore Perry to Japan. His works include: The Story of Kennett (1866) and Beauty and the Beast (1872).
