'This Creaking Floor and All the Ceilings Below' brings together many different facets from the artistic practice of Bart Lunenburg, and his explorations in the built world. Including reproductions of photographs, drawings, scale models, installations, film stills, and exhibition views, this labyrinthine book is conceived as an imaginary building. The viewer-visitor is guided along foundations, corridors, rooms brimming with sunlight, radiant windows, concealed doors, enfilades, winding staircases, banisters, and a woven wall.

Book excerpt: Alexey Titarenko created the series of collages and photomontages that became Nomenklatura of Signs from 1986-1991, under the strict Soviet rule. This new publication presents the series in its entirety for the first time. Working in secret, Titarenko conceived the project as a way to translate the visual reality of Soviet life into a language that expressed its absurdity, in a hierarchy of symbols that, together, formed a nomenclature -- or, in Russian, nomenklatura, a term for the system by which government posts were filled in the Soviet Union. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of Kazimir Malevich, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and other artists of the early 20th century Russian avant-garde, Titarenko captures an uncanny, darkly comic world in which language is controlled and subverted much like the Newspeak of George Orwell's novel 1984. The book includes an introduction by writer Jean-Jacques Mari and art historian Gabriel Bauret, as well as a critical interpretation of the series by art historian Ksenia Nouril. The book is designed by Kelly Doe Studio, NYC.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. OUT OF THE FLESH of our mothers come dreams and memories of the Gods. Of other kind than the normal inducement of interest and increasing skill, there exists a continual pressure upon the artist of which he is sometimes partially conscious but rarely entirely aware. He learns early or late in his career that power of literal reproduction (such as that of the photographic apparatus) is not more than slightly useful to him. He is compelled to find out from his artist predecessors the existence, in representation of real form, of super-sessions of immediate accuracies; he discovers within himself a selective conscience and he is satisfied, normally, in large measure by the extensive field afforded by this broadened and simplified beyond this is a region and that a much greater one, for exploration. The objective understanding, as we see, has to be attacked by the artist and a subconscious method, for correction of conscious visual accuracy, must be used. No amount of manual skill and consciousness of error will produce good drawing. A recent book on drawing by a well-known painter is a case in point; there the examples of masters of draughtsmanship may be compared with the painter-author's own, side by side, and the futility of mere skill and interest examined. Therefore to proceed further, it is necessary to dispose of the subject in art also (that is to say the subject in the illustrative or complex sense). Thus to clear the mind of inessentials permits through a clear and transparent medium, without prepossessions of any kind, the most definite and simple forms and ideas to attain expression.

Book excerpt: Five years ago, Antoinette Nausikaä decided she wanted to observe mountains. In the middle of her frantic urban life she developed a need for stillness and solitude, and she was convinced that mountains were the place to go. Soon however, she discovered that "pure" silence and solitude were nowhere to be found. Looking for the timeless spirit of the mountains, she found fleeting traces of human existence everywhere. She lived and worked on and around eight ancient mountains in Europe and Asia, each one of them a sacred icon and a pilgrimage destination. She travelled to Mount Fuji (JP), Olympus (GR), Ararat (TR) and the five most sacred mountains in China, the Wŭyuè. She observed them, climbed them, photographed, made drawings and dug in the earth for clay to make small sculptures. And so, almost casually, her quest developed into an investigation and presentation of one of the most pressing philosophical themes of this moment: the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene, as interpreted by many authoritative contemporary philosophers, deals with the idea that man and nature are fundamentally separated. An idea that is a typical product of nineteenth-century Romanticism, but is now considered to be out-of-date. After all, our human presence is omnipresent, visible even in the geographical layers of the Earth.

Book excerpt: Geene & De Nooy manifest themselves as rare birds in the world of bird photography, that is dominated by people with a?classic? aesthetic view. Most of the birds they shot are dead; some of them are representations, building materials or even excrements of birds. With?Ornithology? bird art enters a new level, casting a shade over digiscoping as a cheesy hobby. The book is highly recommended by Charles Darwin, Harper Lee, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Parker and Woody Woodpecker, amongst many others. 0 0Exhibition: Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, The Netherlands (06.02-05.06.2016).
