Book excerpt: Gum. It’s been around for centuries—from the ancient Greeks to the American Indians, everyone’s chewed it. But the best kind of gum—bubble gum!—wasn’t invented until 1928, when an enterprising young accountant at Fleer Gum and Candy used his spare time to experiment with different recipes. Bubble-blowing kids everywhere will be delighted with Megan McCarthy’s entertaining pictures and engaging fun facts as they learn the history behind the pink perfection of Dubble Bubble.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas Bubble Dynamics in the Human Body provides a broad range of professionals, from physicians working in a clinic, hospital or hyperbaric facility, to physical scientists trying to understand and predict the dynamics of gas bubble behavior in the body, with an interdisciplinary perspective on gas-bubble disease. Both iatrogenic and decompression-induced gas bubbles are considered. The basic medical and physiological aspects are described first, in plain language, with numerous illustrations that facilitate an intuitive grasp of the basic underlying medicine and physiology. Current issues in the field, particularly microbubbles and microparticles, and their possible role in gas-bubble disease are included. The physical and mathematical material is given at several levels of sophistication, with the "hard-core" math separated out in sections labelled "For the Math Mavens", so that the basic concepts can be grasped at a descriptive level. The field is large and multi-disciplinary, so that some of the discussion that is at a greater depth is given separately in sections labelled "In Greater Detail". Skipping these sections for whatever reason, shouldn’t materially hamper acquiring an overall appreciation of the field. Demonstrates how physical and mathematical tools help to solve underlying problems across physiology and medicine Helps researchers extend their competence and flexibility to the point that they can personally contribute to the field of hyperbaric medicine and physiology, or to other related biological problems that may interest them Provides clinicians with explicit examples of how mathematical modelling can be integrated into clinical treatment and decision-making

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a fundamental understanding of the fluid dynamic nature of a bubble wake, more specifically the primary wake, in liquids and liquid-solid suspensions, an dto the role it plays in various important flow phenomena of multiphase systems. Examples of these phenomena are liquid/solids mixing, bubble coalescence and disintergration, particle entrainment to the freeboard, and bed contraction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume in an approximately annual series which comprises the proceedings of the International Workshops on Condensed Matter Theories. The first of these meetings took place in 1977 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and successive workshops have been held in Trieste, Italy (1978), Buenos Aires, Argentina (1979), Caracas, Venezuela (1980), Mexico City, Mexico (1981), St. Louis, USA (1982), Altenberg, Federal Republic of Germany (1983), Granada, Spain (1984), San Francisco, USA (1985), and Argonne, USA (1986). The present volume contains the proceedings of the Eleventh Workshop which took place in Qulu, Finland during the period 27 July - 1 August, 1987. The original motivation and the historical evolution of the series of Workshops have been amply described in the preface to the first volume in the present series. An important objective throughout has been to work against the ever-present trend for physics to fragment into increasingly narrow fields of specialisation, between which communication is difficult. The Workshops have traditionally sought to emphasise the unity of physics. By bringing together scientists working in many different areas of condensed matter theory, for the dual purpose of fostering collaborations between them and promoting the exchange of ideas between various disciplines, a common language has been exposed and developed. The Editor of the first volume in the series, F. B.

Book excerpt: Although This Book Is Intended As A Sequel To Foundations Of Discrete Mathematics By The Same Author, It Can Be Read Independently Of The Latter, As The Relevant Background Needed Has Been Reviewed In Chapter 1. The Subsequent Chapters Deal With Graph Theory (With Applications), Analysis Of Algorithms (With A Detailed Study Of A Few Sorting Algorithms And A Discussion Of Tractability), Linear Programming (With Applications, Variations, Karmarkars Polynomial Time Algorithm, Integer And Quadratic Programming), Applications Of Algebra (To Polyas Theory Of Counting, Galois Theory, Coding Theory Of Designs). A Chapter On Matroids Familiarises The Reader With This Relatively New Branch Of Discrete Mathematics.Even Though Some Of The Topics Are Relatively Advanced, An Attempt Has Been Made To Keep The Style Elementary, So That A Sincere Student Can Read The Book On His Own. A Large Number Of Comments, Exercises, And References Is Included To Broaden The Readers Scope Of Vision. A Detailed Index Is Provided For Easy Reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Turbulence Conferences have been organized under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee (Euromech) to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of recent and new results in the field of turbulence. The first conference was organized in Lyon in 1986 with 152 participants. The second and third conferences were held in Berlin (1988) and Stockholm (1990) with 165 and 172 participants respectively. The fourth was organized in Delft from 30 June to 3 July 1992 by the J.M. Burgers Centre. There were 214 participants from 22 countries. This steadily growing number of participants demonstrates both the success and need for this type of conference. The main topics of the Fourth European Turbulence Conference were: Dynamical Systems and Transition; Statistical Physics and Turbulence; Experiments and Novel Experimental Techniques; Particles and Bubbles in Turbulence; Simulation Methods; Coherent Structures; Turbulence Modelling and Compressibility Effects. In addition a special session was held on the subject of CeBular Automata. Each of the sessions was introduced with a survey lecture. The lecturers were: W. Eckhaus, AJ. Libchaber, L. Katgerman, F. Durst, M. Lesieur, B. Legras, D.G. Dritschel and P. Bradshaw. The contributions of the participants were subdivided into oral and poster presentations. In addition to the normal program, some Speciai Interest Groups of Ercoftac (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) presented their research activities in the form of a poster.
