Book excerpt: Annotation: "Avicenna: Sage of the East" is an insightful exploration of the life, philosophy, and medical contributions of Abū-ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn ibn-ʿAbdallāh Ibn-Sīnā, commonly known as Avicenna. This annotation provides a glimpse into the book's key themes, historical context, and the enduring impact of Avicenna's work. The narrative begins by immersing readers in the cultural and intellectual landscape of the Islamic world during Avicenna's time, setting the stage for his emergence as a preeminent philosopher and physician. The author skillfully weaves together historical anecdotes and scholarly analysis to offer a comprehensive understanding of Avicenna's life, education, and the challenges he faced in a tumultuous era. The book delves into Avicenna's philosophical achievements, elucidating his contributions to metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology. It carefully explores his magnum opus, "The Book of Healing," and "The Canon of Medicine," shedding light on how these seminal works became foundational texts not only in the Islamic world but also in medieval Europe, influencing figures like Thomas Aquinas. One of the book's strengths lies in its detailed examination of Avicenna's medical legacy.

His use of Aristotelian logic and his work on the concept of “being” opened the door for a rationalist study of religion, influencing the later Christian philosophers Aquinas, Descartes, and Kant. Avicenna’s monumental Canon of Medicine is regarded as possibly the greatest medical work ever. Available in a Latin translation in Europe one hundred years after his death, it continued to be used there for the next six centuries.

Book excerpt: In this work a distinguished scholar of Islamic religion examines the mysticism and psychological thought of the great eleventh-century Persian philosopher and physician Avicenna (Ibn Sina), author of over a hundred works on theology, logic, medicine, and mathematics. Henry Corbin's discovery in an Istanbul library of the manuscript of a Persian translation of and commentary on Avicenna's "Hayy ibn Yaqzan," written in Arabic, led him to an analysis of three of Avicenna's mystical "recitals." These form an initiatory cycle leading the adept along the path of spiritual progress. In Part I Corbin summarizes the great themes that show the philosophical situation of Avicennan man in the cosmos and presents translations of these three great Avicennan recitals. Part II is a complete translation, with notes, of the Persian commentary. Originally published in 1960. Book excerpt: the philosophers in the West, none, perhaps, is better known by name and less familiar in actual content of his ideas than the medieval Muslim philosopher, physician, minister and naturalist Abu Ali Ibn Sina, known since the days of the scholastics as Avicenna. In this book the author, himself a philosopher, and long known for his studies of Arabic thought, presents a factual account of Avicenna's philosophy. Setting the thinker in the context of his often turbulent times and tracing the roots and influences of Avicenna's ideas, this book offers a factual philosophical portrait. It details Avicenna's account of being as a synthesis between the seemingly irreconcilable extremes of Aristotelian eternalism and the creationism of monotheistic scripture. It examines Avicenna's distinctive theory of knowledge, his ideas about immortality and individuality, including the famous "floating man argument", his contributions to logic, and his probing thoughts on rhetoric and poetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibn Zuhr (or Avenzoar) of twelfth-century Seville was the most important physician of Muslim Spain. His family boasted six generations of physicians, and also included midwives, jurists, poets, and viziers. His Kitab al-taysir, a compendium of therapeutics, was translated into Latin and Hebrew; its Latin version, Liber Teisir, served as a companion book to the Colliget, the Latin translation of Kitab al-kulliyat, a largely theoretical book of the philosopher-physician Ibn Rushd (Averroes). The rabbi-physician Maimonides quoted extensively from Ibn Zuhr and considered him "unique in his age and one of the great sages." But Ibn Zuhr was not just a keen observer of patients and a dispenser of remedies: buried within his generally dry narrative are candid recollections and views on a variety of subjects and of his society. And his medical recipes could be compared to current forms of alternative medicine. Together, his holistic approach to medicine and his spontaneous vignettes make him one of the most refreshing physicians of any age. This account of the life and legacy of Ibn Zuhr, the first of its kind, reveals the man and his world, his importance in his own times, and his relevance to our world today. Against a modern culture of often impersonal, bureaucratized, and costly health care, Ibn Zuhr's embodiment of the wisdom of the ages and his role as healer-priest can be an inspiration.
