Book excerpt: Autotrophic and methylotrophic microorganisms are able to grow at the expense of one-carbon compounds (e.g. carbon dioxide, formaldehyde) as the principal carbon sources for the synthesis of cell material, using light, inorganic compounds or one-carbon compounds as energy sources. The study of the special adaptations required in aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms to sustain an autotrophic or methylotrophic mode of life is a fascinating field of research for scientists from various disciplines. Current research efforts not only focus on fundamental aspects, i.e. metabolic pathways and their regulation, ecology, energy conversion and genetics, but also the possible application of these organisms, in waste water treatment, degradation of xenobiotics, single-cell protein production, as biocatalysts for the production of fine chemicals, draws strong attention. The aim of this series is to provide annual reviews on the biochemistry, physiology, ecology, genetics, and application of microbial autotrophs and methylotrophs. The scope of the series includes all aspects of the biology of these microbes, and will deal with phototrophic and chemolithotrophic prokaryotic autotrophs, carboxydobacteria, acetogenic-, methanogenic- and methylotrophic bacteria, as well as methylotrophic eukaryotes. The exciting advances made in recent years in the study of these organisms is reflected in the chapters of this first volume which have been written by experts in the field. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the contributors for their stimulating and comprehensive chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Diversity in the Genomic Era, Second Edition presents techniques used for microbial taxonomy and phylogeny, along with their applications and respective strengths and challenges. Though many advanced techniques for the identification of unknown bacterium are available in the genomic era, a far fewer number of the total microbial species have been discovered and identified to date. With that in mind, this book incorporates recently developed biosystematics methods and approaches to assess microbial taxonomy, with suitable recommendations for where to apply them across the range of bacterial identification and infectious disease research. Here, international researchers in the field first provide a broad overview of microbial genomics research and microbiome directed medicine, followed by sections on molecular tools for microbial diversity research, extremophilic microbial diversity, functional microbial diversity across application areas, microbial diversity and infectious disease research, and future directions for research. Step-by-step methodologies are provided for key techniques, along with applied case studies breaking down recent research studies into the practical components, illuminating pathways for new studies across the field. This new edition has been fully updated to address advances in the field of microbiome directed medicine, and whole genome sequencing for studying microbial diversity, considering both recent technological advances and new applications areas, from extremophile studies to the latest approaches in human microbiome analysis. Instructs in techniques used for microbial taxonomy and phylogeny, with discussions of their applications and respective pros and cons Reviews the evolving field of microbial typing and the genomic technologies that enable comparative metagenomic analysis of complex microbial environments Covers microbiome directed translational research, as well as whole genome sequencing for studying microbial diversity, with newly added research protocols and case studies Reviews future applications in the field of microbiome directed medicine Features chapter contributions from global experts in the field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The depletion of fossil resources and an ever-growing human population create an increasing demand for the development of sustainable processes for the utilization of renewable resources. As autotrophic microorganisms offer numerous metabolic pathways for the fixation of carbon dioxide and the metabolic utilization of light, electricity and inorganic energy donors, they are expected to play a pivotal role in an emerging carbon neutral society. This text-book presents the metabolic principles of autotrophy and current efforts for their utilization in biotechnology, including photoautotrophic, chemolithoautotrophic and electroautotrophic organisms. It outlines how modern molecular biology and process engineering create technologies that allow to use industrial off-gases and inorganic energy for the synthesis of bio-based plastics, materials and other chemical products. The text-book is ideally suited for students in advanced graduate and master courses and offers a reference for PhD students, engineers, chemists, biologists and all with an interests in biotechnology and renewable resources.

Book excerpt: Autotrophic bacteria, those prokaryotes that obtain all carbon required for biosynthesis from inorganic sources, are among the dominant organisms involved in the natural cycling of matter. The formation of iron, sulfur, and limestone deposits, and of oil, coal, and natural gas would not be possible without autotrophic bacteria. Ecosystems, as we know them, would not function without these prokaryotes. The uniqueness of the autotrophic bacteria was first recognized 100 years ago by the great Russian bacteriologist S.N. Winogradsky. Since that time, research on these bacteria has revolutionized our ideas of the evolution of bacteria and higher life forms, as well as contributed greatly to advances in our understanding of photosynthesis and other biochemical processes. In this volume, a group of distinguished scientists presents the latest research on the diversity, ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, evolution, and genetics of autotrophic bacteria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent determination of genome sequences for a wide range of bacteria has made in-depth knowledge of prokaryotic metabolic function essential in order to give biochemical, physiological, and ecological meaning to the genomic information. Clearly describing the important metabolic processes that occur in prokaryotes under different conditions and in different environments, this advanced text provides an overview of the key cellular processes that determine bacterial roles in the environment, biotechnology, and human health. Prokaryotic structure is described as well as the means by which nutrients are transported into cells across membranes. Glucose metabolism through glycolysis and the TCA cycle are discussed, as well as other trophic variations found in prokaryotes, including the use of organic compounds, anaerobic fermentation, anaerobic respiratory processes, and photosynthesis. The regulation of metabolism through control of gene expression and control of the activity of enzymes is also covered, as well as survival mechanisms used under starvation conditions.
