Book excerpt: A little girl stares with amazement at the big city while she grasps her grandfather's hand... A little boy watches his grandmother struggle to collect firewood with only one good leg and an old chair for balance... A modern Cinderella story about a pretty young girl with childhood dreams and an innocent heart. A handsome young man with a drive for the wild side and a passion for living life to the fullest. Can two young lives so completely opposite of each other form a lasting relationship? This true love story is presented in its rawest, most unedited form through the memoirs of two individuals destined to meet and fall in love. ***** I very much enjoyed this book. It takes you back to a time when America seemed a little less crazy, a little more pure. And yet at the heart of it is finding that lifelong love from the perspective of her and him. That love, as wholesome as apple pie, is not defined by time or era, making the book as relevant today as in the period it was written. A wonderful read. --Margie I could easily identify with the characters as I remembered my first date with my husband. It is truly love that brought them together in this story of faith, love, and passion. --Kathy Chappell Wonderful book as I know the author. I loved reading about her and her husband's childhood and their relationship. Excellent read! --Connie Lucas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have an inheritance to leave...only some leave more than what is required. There is no greater gift of inheritance than the gift of words; whether written or spoken, they remain someone’s memory, and our legacy, forever. I do not ascribe to chance or happenstance. This novel was written over twenty years ago. I was working with my father-in-law to get it published before he passed from this life. Our plans and efforts, however, did not come to be; he passed away May 28, 2015. My daddy became sick the following year, putting this novel on hold. When my daddy passed away, I was left to care for my mother until I had to find an assisted-living facility to give her the care that she needed, and I could no longer personally provide. Which leads us to the setting of this novel, taking place in the early 1990s and having reference to stories as far back as the 1920s. I never thought that at the age of fifty-three, I would be able to recall a simpler time in my life that wasn’t so long ago. In the early 1990s, we had not yet experienced the technology boom that forever changed communication and the way we live. In this novel, you will find no cell phones, no texting, no phone cameras, no social media, no key fobs, and no computerized medical notes. What you will find, however, is the simple beauty of the personal relationships of the residents and staff of an assisted-living facility. While the storyline of this novel is poignantly beautiful, there is a much deeper understanding to be gained. We would all do well if we could learn to listen honestly and become slower to speak. May we be provoked to desire to check ourselves, humble ourselves, and take it upon ourselves to ascertain the exact meaning of our vocabulary. My prayer is that we may be encouraged by the intention and desire of the author in the sharing of this novel, The Voice of the Sphinx—the inheritance of my father-in-law, John J. Klingerman, MD—to his dear children, John, Kelly, Mark, and Chris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F I N A L Y! ...she's getting to see the world. A suburban American housewife, Patty LaPlante, finds herself transplanted to a little town in Belgium—a result of her husband's corporate transfer. Her lifelong dream of travel is finally coming to pass, but the adjustment is hard for their three children, who are reluctant to leave everything they know. Given her propensity to attract trouble, her naivete lands Patty into many comic misadventures, such as introducing the Mexican ambassador to a roomful of people by the wrong name, accepting a lift on a lonely road in Spain from a man of dubious repute who thought she was a street-walker, and dealing in diamonds in a shady part of town. As her husband states, “Every time she walks out the door, I wonder if I’ll ever see her again.” But there are poignant and heartrending moments as well. There is the day at the Luxembourg War Memorial Cemetery when she finds herself standing on General George S. Patton's grave, as well as witnessing the gut-wrenching scene that unfolds before her at the infamous Berlin Wall before it fell. At the end of her husband's assignment, however, Patty had grown through her experiences and had become more street smart and world-wise. With the lessons she learned, she knows she can never return to the past, nor remain the person she used to be.

Book excerpt: (Limelight). Songwriting: A Complete Guide to the Craft is both a comprehensive course for beginning and experienced songwriters and a rich source of new ideas, inspiration, and tricks of the trade for those who have already achieved professional standing. This fresh new edition not only contains all of the original volume's cogent advice on how to write the always-popular genres the country song, the ballad, and the love song but has been revised to include: Examples of hard rock, acid, heavy metal, bubblegum, hip-hop, salsa, rap, gangsta, reggae, ska, soul, and many other of today's most recorded styles; Finding a song concept, distilling the hook, choosing a form, adding harmony, and selecting rhythm; An appendix telling how to copyright, computerize, notate, record, and sell your song; Full glossary of musical and songwriting terms, an explanation of rap-speak with a useful section on rhyme for rap songs, many musical examples of well-known songs, and a complete index. Unlike other books, Songwriting emphasizes the art without being arty and technique of creating a song. For the novice, Stephen Citron goes step-by-step through the writing of a song presupposing no prior knowledge of notation, harmony, rhythmic values, or rhyme. For the more experienced songwriter, Songwriting will serve as a one-stop reference and as an endless source of fresh ideas.

Book excerpt: Each of the more than seven hundred entries in the dictionary contains a description of the historical background of each of the two types of language, literal and nonliteral, and provides an explanation for the relationship between them. Wherever possible, dates of first record in English are provided, along with the bibliographical sources of these dates; and all of the works that record those terms and expressions are given in coded form as listed in the Key to Works Cited. A Guide to Reading the Entries illustrates the typical form of an entry by analyzing an example from the dictionary that introduces five nonliteral expressions, cites thirteen bibliographical sources, and refers the reader to three other relevant entries by means of cross-references. Following the dictionary proper is a Classification of Terms According to Source, in which nearly three hundred nonliteral terms and expressions are listed under the more than four hundred literal categories from which they derive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK: God Did Make Little Green Apples is a delightful story with charming characters who teach a simple message about how unkind words and bullying can deeply hurt others. Readers will learn that judging others by their outward appearance is wrong; rather, we should look inward to the heart and always ask ourselves, "What would 'King Golden' do?" **** ABOUT THE AUTHOR: For author Cecelia Assunto, writing has always been a part of her life. As a teenager, she was a columnist for her school newspaper. Later she began to write poems for loved ones as well as skits and Bible studies for her church. In fact, Assunto first penned God Did Make Little Green Apples as a skit for a ladies' retreat over fifteen years ago! Only recently did she pull out that old skit from so long ago and put it into rhyme for a children's book. Cecelia Assunto, a retired accounting clerk, lives in New Hampshire with her number one supporter, Joe, with whom she will soon celebrate fifty years of marriage. She has been blessed with three children: Joe, Mike, and Andrea; and additionally blessed with five grandsons: Michael, Nicholas, Nino, Anthony, and Joey. **** ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Darcey DeMatte learned to draw before she learned to walk. "Drawing is like breathing to me," she admits. "When I hear a story, I see pictures. It's who I am." Darcey has illustrated several children's books including two that she both wrote and illustrated. With the love of her life and a menagerie of furry children, Darcey makes her home in Hudson Valley, New York, surrounded by their five children and two grandsons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year (Nonfiction) The darkly intense Irish-American family drama come alive like never before in this "virtuosic meta-memoir" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “The blood-red of Manhattan, the brilliant green of an Irish-American wake, the blue-rinsed divas of the opera and the bathhouse alike” (Michael Gorra) are hypnotically rendered in this “astoundingly smart book” (John Waters). With some of the most lyrical cadences in recent literature, the legendary James McCourt animates twentieth-century New York through a “kaleidoscope of sharp-edged, brilliantly colored memories” (J. D. McClatchy) and with “dynamic prose and high-brow erudition that has gone the way of the dodo” (Publishers Weekly). Braiding a nostalgic portrait of the eternal city with a boy’s funny, guttersnipe precocity and outrageous coming-of-age in the 1940s and 1950s, McCourt revisits the fantasy city of his youth with Proustian memories of steam calliopes in Central Park, Hiroshima “obliterated in a flash of light,” and closing his mother’s eyes for the last time. As sensational as it is satisfying, Lasting City, a profoundly American work, identifies the spot where genius and madness meet.
