For me, subject matter is only an excuse to observe abstract organic shapes and patterns where they exist in nature and push their shape-space relationships to the limits. This is what art is to me. It is what my art is about. ART ATTITUDE: the random thoughts of RFM McInnis... a sort of autobiography, has been developed over a 60 year span of building a successful art career. Google “rfm mcinnis images” • It contains his thoughts, discoveries and theories on art as he experienced them. • It is not an art book. • It is a book about art thinking. • It could act as a guide for artists wondering what it’s really like out there. •It contains an art lesson in drawing and tips for artists and wanna-be’s.

Book excerpt: For generations, Canadian artists have made their mark on the world, with countless individuals rising to fame on stage and screen, and as frontrunners in the various arts, inspiring and influencing all who come after them. One of these legends has been largely forgotten, though his contribution to the arts have inspired the likes of Monty Python and Kids in the Hall, and brought hope and laughter to troops serving their countries at home and overseas, all the while pushing boundaries as a prolific artist, illustrator, author, and actor. This book tells the story of forgotten legend John Wilson (Jack) McLaren from his birth in Scotland to his early years in Canada, becoming a soldier in WWI, entertaining his comrades in arms on the stages of Europe, his business career after the war, his deep involvement with the Group of Seven, his membership in Toronto’s famed Arts & Letters Club, and his eventual retirement to the community of Benmiller, near Goderich, Ontario, where he passed away in 1988. His is a story that deserves to be told ... and remembered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By adapting a code of conduct at a young age (the Code of the Trail), Lloyd embarked on a lifelong quest to live out his every dream. He became a pilot, he had a brush with the big time in the NHL, he flew with the Snowbirds, he had remarkable encounters with Pierre Trudeau, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, and found a job that paid him to have fun. But a sixteen-year search for ancient wisdom, hidden in rock paintings and carvings (pictographs and petroglyphs), an often-dangerous odyssey, brings rewards and consequences unexpected and revelatory. In often very funny, often very moving episodes, Chasing the Muse: Canada, reveals new insights into Canadian history, identity, and landscape. Lloyd has received more than 35 provincial, national, and international awards, including the Academy of Canadian Cinema, the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco, and the World Festival of Tourism Films in Milan, Italy. As a painter, he has had five solo show of oils and acrylics of scenes from across Canada. Texas Governor George W. Bush made Lloyd an Honorary Texan. He was the creative director for a gift from the Province of Ontario to HR Queen Elizabeth II. While filming, he was twice kissed by a moose and once surrounded by black bears. He has been alone in the middle of a herd of caribou, stared a polar bear in the eye and had tigers jumping over him. His films have been translated into French, German, Dutch, Japanese, Cree, Ojibway, Ojicree, Inuktitut, and Russian.

Book excerpt: A poignant biography of Jacob Davidovitch Sudermann, a teacher and artist from a Russian Mennonite community who, like so many others, fell victim to the bloodthirsty paranoia of the Stalinist purges and died in a Siberian gulag in 1937. Sketches from Siberia is pieced together from letters, sketches, and paintings done by Sudermann himself during his imprisonment as well as the unpublished memoir of his sister Anna. It was Anna and other family members that brought these documents with them when they immigrated to Canada in the late forties. This important biography also serves as a valuable cultural history of the plight of the Russian Mennonite community. At once moving and chilling, it is a story that shows the strength that lies at the heart of kindness, the light that outlives the darkness. A timely story even eighty years after Sudermann’s death, it reminds us of the plight of displaced communities around the world today that are struggling to survive.

Little did he know the role war was going to play in his life. Chany enjoyed a carefree life as a child in his beach town. He lived like Huckleberry Finn from the pages of Mark Twain. On April 21, 1961 the Bay of Pigs attack failed to liberate Cuba from communism. His parents decided to look after Chany's future and they told their 15 year old son that he was going to be "SENT to the USA." Chany arrived at Miami Florida on September 12, 1961 as a "Pedro Pan Child". A movement created by the Catholic Church with the US Government and some antirevolutionaries in Cuba that brought over 14,000 unaccompanied children from Cuba to the US in the early sixties. He struggled in Puerto Rico where he was sent to live with a distant relative. He was working during the day for 65 cents an hour at a loading dock, while attending evening school to finish his High School. When he finished High School in 1963 he moved to Virginia to attend Va Tech and become an architect. He studied during the day while working at night. He graduated in December 1968 and was drafted into the US Army in February 1969. Sebastian did not start living a normal civilian life until 1971. The issues he had to face in order to achieve the "American Dream" are unique and worth reading about.
