Book excerpt: "The book traces the early history of the self-help genre and the literary depiction of ambition in Victorian British fiction. Stories of hardworking characters who bring themselves out of rags to riches abound in the Victorian era. In chapters featuring the works of novelists, the author demonstrates that Victorian fiction dramatized ambition and problematized it as well"--

Book excerpt: Artist Archie Rand creates a glorious reimagining of the 613 Jewish commandments using comic strips and pulp fiction jackets to capture each mitzvah. A gift for the eyes, this unique collage of images, ranging from Lox to superheroes, is not your Bubbe’s graphic novel. "If Leviticus seems an unlikely text for a comic strip, look again. Or rather look at Archie Rand's magnificent series of commandments, The 613. The beauty, terror, and fun are all there in one magic, mesmerizing wall of colored shapes and visual oratory. It's a splendid series." —John Ashbery “[R]ichly colored, always stirring works of visual art…[The 613] is something like seeing a cinema-sized version of ancient wisdom transmuted through a comic (and then blown up again).” —Flavorwire “A new book by a trailblazing artist...The 613 pairs mitzvahs with appropriated images from Mad Magazine, pulp and 20th-century illustration. Sometimes the connections are obvious, sometimes intriguingly oblique. It is outrageous and inviting, in-your-face and mysterious, making Rand’s case 613 times over.” —David Van Biema, Religion News Service Archie Rand's career as an artist spans five decades and myriad themes and genres. Among his pioneering explorations, The 613 is surely one of his most ambitious feats yet. Without any idea where the work would be exhibited, Rand began transforming each and every one of the 613 mitzvahs, or commandments, into its own breathtaking painting, a series that took five years to complete. Each of the gorgeous and perplexing panels features a vibrant, unexpected image that brings forth the heart of its law and commands our eyes to linger. Rand is startling and original in his rich color choices, bold characters, and extraordinarily expressive approach. The New York Times describes the paintings as "rendered in the style of comics and pulp fiction book jackets, a dash of Mad magazine, a spoonful of Tales of the Crypt, some grotesques, some superheroes, always action, emotion, drama." Whether grotesque or dramatic, each painting provokes a sense of wonder and self-reflection, making The 613 a book to be visited time and time again. Perfect for readers of art, religion, or popular visual culture, The 613 may be the most audacious and distinctive gift book of its kind.

Book excerpt: Filled with glamour, mystery, and madness, Archie and Amélie is the true story chronicling a tumultuous love affair in the Gilded Age. John Armstrong "Archie" Chanler was an heir to the Astor fortune, an eccentric, dashing, and handsome millionaire. Amélie Rives, Southern belle and the goddaughter of Robert E. Lee, was a daring author, a stunning temptress, and a woman ahead of her time. Archie and Amélie seemed made for each other—both were passionate, intense, and driven by emotion—but the very things that brought them together would soon tear them apart. Their marriage began with a “secret” wedding that found its way onto the front page of the New York Times, to the dismay of Archie’s relatives and Amélie’s many gentleman friends. To the world, the couple appeared charmed, rich, and famous; they moved in social circles that included Oscar Wilde, Teddy Roosevelt, and Stanford White. But although their love was undeniable, they tormented each other, and their private life was troubled from the start. They were the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald of their day—a celebrated couple too dramatic and unconventional to last—but their tumultuous story has largely been forgotten. Now, Donna M. Lucey vividly brings to life these extraordinary lovers and their sweeping, tragic romance. “In the Virginia hunt country just outside of Charlottesville, where I live, the older people still tell stories of a strange couple who died some two generations ago. The stories involve ghosts, the mysterious burning of a church, a murder at a millionaire’s house, a sensational lunacy trial, and a beautiful, scantily clad young woman prowling her gardens at night as if she were searching for something or someone—or trying to walk off the effects of the morphine that was deranging her. I was inclined to dismiss all of this as tall tales Virginians love to spin out; but when I looked into these yarns I found proof that they were true. . . .” —Donna M. Lucey on Archie and Amélie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before me there were a few, after me there shall be no more . . . . As I begin to pen my life’s story, I realize that God is to be thanked for His mercy, goodness and grace that has kept me for such a time as this. Today I find myself living on God’s promised three score and ten, and if by reason of strength they may be fourscore – which amounts to eighty years in time. I stand at the threshold of my promised eighty years “with strength” and in God’s favor. Life for me has been quite a journey and most of my ambitions have been achieved and found to be very fulfilling. I am grateful to have been able to accept the opportunities and challenges that have confronted me in my careers and travels. I retired from the U. S. Air Force after 20 years of honorable service. I was fortunate to have people in my life to help strengthen me when I was weak or needed assistance. I covet the memories I have experienced and will never forget the people who were the most influential. I was blessed to complete a second career as a Policeman at Indianapolis, University Purdue University of Indiana. Becoming physically handicapped, I was forced to retire after 23 years of time served instead of the 25- 30 years I had intended. It has been a pleasure to research my past, and with the help of my wife, Delia, I’ve been successful in getting my story in print. I pray you will enjoy reading what I have to share with you and prayerfully I will inspire someone to seek out a lifetime career in the “Army” of the Lord and the U. S. Military Service. Of all the pride I possess for land and country, I’m most proud and thankful that I am where God needed me to be at this time in my life and I have realized the state of mental strain I’m in and now fully seeking the help I so desperately need to get well. I sincerely regret that I fathered no children, especially a son to carry on my family’s name and legacy – therefore, after me there shall be no more!
