This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximate Global Convergence and Adaptivity for Coefficient Inverse Problems is the first book in which two new concepts of numerical solutions of multidimensional Coefficient Inverse Problems (CIPs) for a hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) are presented: Approximate Global Convergence and the Adaptive Finite Element Method (adaptivity for brevity). Two central questions for CIPs are addressed: How to obtain a good approximations for the exact solution without any knowledge of a small neighborhood of this solution, and how to refine it given the approximation. The book also combines analytical convergence results with recipes for various numerical implementations of developed algorithms. The developed technique is applied to two types of blind experimental data, which are collected both in a laboratory and in the field. The result for the blind backscattering experimental data collected in the field addresses a real world problem of imaging of shallow explosives.

Book excerpt: This volume is a result of two international workshops, namely the Second Annual Workshop on Inverse Problems and the Workshop on Large-Scale Modeling, held jointly in Sunne, Sweden from May 1-6 2012. The subject of the inverse problems workshop was to present new analytical developments and new numerical methods for solutions of inverse problems. The objective of the large-scale modeling workshop was to identify large-scale problems arising in various fields of science and technology and covering all possible applications, with a particular focus on urgent problems in theoretical and applied electromagnetics. The workshops brought together scholars, professionals, mathematicians, and programmers and specialists working in large-scale modeling problems. The contributions in this volume are reflective of these themes and will be beneficial to researchers in this area.

This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers peer-reviewed, selected papers presented at the “Mathematical and Numerical Approaches for Multi-Wave Inverse Problems” conference at the Centre Internacional de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM) in Marseille, France, in April 2019. It brings the latest research into new, reliable theoretical approaches and numerical techniques for solving nonlinear and inverse problems arising in multi-wave and hybrid systems. Multi-wave inverse problems have a wide range of applications in acoustics, electromagnetics, optics, medical imaging, and geophysics, to name but a few. In turn, it is well known that inverse problems are both nonlinear and ill-posed: two factors that pose major challenges for the development of new numerical methods for solving these problems, which are discussed in detail. These papers will be of interest to all researchers and graduate students working in the fields of nonlinear and inverse problems and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides academic discussion on the theory and practice of mathematical analysis of nonlinear and inverse problems in electromagnetics and their applications. From mathematical problem statement to numerical results, the featured articles provide a concise overview of comprehensive approaches to the solution of problems. Articles highlight the most recent research concerning reliable theoretical approaches and numerical techniques and cover a wide range of applications, including acoustics, electromagnetics, optics, medical imaging, and geophysics. The nonlinear and ill-posed nature of inverse problems and the challenges they present when developing new numerical methods are explained, and numerical verification of proposed new methods on simulated and experimental data is provided. Based on the special session of the same name at the 2017 Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium, this book offers a platform for interaction between theoretical and practical researchers and between senior and incoming members in the field.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected contributions presented at two instances of the "JSPS/SAC Seminar: On Gas Kinetic/Dynamics and Life Science", held by the Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 25-26, 2021 (virtual) and March 17-18, 2022 (virtual). Works in this book provide a concise approach to the theoretical and numerical analysis of kinetic type equations that arise, for example, in modeling industrial, medical, and environmental problems. Readers will find some of the most recent theoretical results, newly developed numerical methods in the field, and some open problems. Possible application areas encompass fission/fusion energy, electromagnetics, nuclear science and engineering, medical service, radiation oncology, and plants growth conditions, to name a few. The JSPS/SAC seminars are jointly organized by JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)—Stockholm Office and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology & University of Gothenburg, Sweden. These seminars foster discussions on the mathematical theory, industrial and life science applications, and numerical analysis of non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations modeling collision-less plasma and charged particles. In the numerical part, first numerical methods are proposed to solve ill-posed Cauchy problems for both linear and quasilinear PDEs. Next, various versions of the convexification method are developed for a number of Coefficient Inverse Problems.
