Book excerpt: Recently, considerable research effort has been devoted to the fabrication of structures by adhesive bonding due to its definite advantages compared with other conventional techniques such as casting and welding. With bonding the need for stress relieving is avoided, the lead time is reduced and the design can be carried out according to optimum principles with the ability to bond different materials: for example, aluminium to steel, plastics to metals. These advantages have led to continuous efforts in studying the mechanism of bonding, in improving the properties of structural of adhesive bonding in technically adhesives and in widening the use demanding industrial applications. The aim of this book is to present recent developments in the use of adhesive bonding in structural fabrication throughout the world, as illustrations to successful appli cation of this novel technique of fabrication. For industrial applications to be successful, the engineer should be aware ofthe various types of adhesives available and of their properties, and also of the new design philosophy to be adopted in such bonded structures, and a portion of the book is aimed at highlighting the properties of the adhesives and their suitability and at assisting the engineer in his choice of the proper adhesive for the job at hand. Also emphasised in this book are the various means of destructive and non-destructive testing of bonded joints, with special mention of structures fabricated by adhesive bonding.

Book excerpt: For several years, I have been responsible for organizing and teaching in the fall a short course on "Fundamentals of Adhesion: Theory, Practice, and Applications" at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Every spring I would try to assemble the most pertinent subjects and line up several capable lecturers for the course. However, there has always been one thing missing-an authoritative book that covers most aspects of adhesion and adhesive bonding. Such a book would be used by the participants as a main reference throughout the course and kept as a sourcebook after the course had been completed. On the other hand, this book could not be one of those "All you want to know about" volumes, simply because adhesion is an interdisciplinary and ever-growing field. For the same reason, it would be very difficult for a single individual, especially me, to undertake the task of writing such a book. Thus, I relied on the principle that one leaves the truly monumental jobs to experts, and I finally succeeded in asking several leading scientists in the field of adhesion to write separate chapters for this collection. Some chapters emphasize theoretical concepts and others experimental techniques. In the humble beginning, we planned to include only twelve chapters. However, we soon realized that such a plan would leave too much ground uncovered, and we resolved to increase the coverage. After the book had evolved into thirty chapters, we started to feel that perhaps our mission had been accomplished.

Book excerpt: Aimed at engineers and materials scientists in a wide range of sectors, this book is a unique source of surface preparation principles and techniques for plastics, thermosets, elastomers, ceramics and metals bonding. With emphasis on the practical, it draws together the technical principles of surface science and surface treatments technologies to enable practitioners to improve existing surface preparation processes to improve adhesion and, as a result, enhance product life. This book describes and illustrates the surface preparations and operations that must be applied to a surface before acceptable adhesive bonding is achieved. It is meant to be an exhaustive overview, including more detailed explanation where necessary, in a continuous and logical progression. The book provides a necessary grounding in the science and practice of adhesion, without which adequate surface preparation is impossible. Surface characterization techniques are included, as is an up-to-date assessment of existing surface treatment technologies such as Atmospheric Plasma, Degreasing, Grit blasting, laser ablation and more. Fundamental material considerations are prioritised over specific applications, making this book relevant to all industries using adhesives, such as medical, automotive, aerospace, packaging and electronics. This second edition represents a full and detailed update, with all major developments in the field included and three chapters added to cover ceramic surface treatment, plasma treatment of non-metallic materials, and the effect of additives on surface properties of plastics. A vital resource for improving existing surface treatment processes to increase product life by creating stronger, more durable adhesive bonds Relevant across a variety of industries, including medical, automotive and packaging Provides essential grounding in the science of surface adhesion, and details how this links with the practice of surface treatment
