Book excerpt: Research on antiviral drugs and their mode of action in infected cells. in animals and in man. has led to a better understanding of the molecular pro cesses involved in virus replication. Screeninq of large numbers of natural and semisynthetic compounds resulted in the characterization of certain sub stances that had a limited efficiency as antiviral druqs. A few chemically synthesized compounds were also found to be effective as antiviral agents in the chemotherapy of human virus diseases. A major difficulty in the develop ment of effective antiviral agents has been the lack of selectivity. and toxicity for uninfected cells. of drugs that effectively inhibited virus replication in vitro. Further understanding of the molecular processes of virus replication in infected cells has resulted in the development of new antivirals directed at virus-coded enzymes or proteins. Recent studies on antivirals that are activated by the herpes simplex virus type l-coded thy midine kinase from a prod rug to an antiviral drug have opened new directions in the development of effective antiviral drugs. The present book deals with a number of antiviral drugs effective against herpes simplex viruses and provides some insight into the molecular aspects of virus replication. It also throws light on the new approaches to the development of antiviral drugs. The molecular basis of the antiviral activity of new and known drugs and their possible use in chemotherapy of viral disease are presented in this book.

The book is comprised of eight chapters that discuss various aspects of interferon. The text first introduces the main concepts of the subject matter. The succeeding chapter discusses various concerns about interferon, including the production, nature, mechanisms, and mode of actions. The book also covers interferon in humans and animals, and its significance. The text will be of great use to students of microbiology, virology, genetics, and immunology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive account of the human herpesviruses provides an encyclopedic overview of their basic virology and clinical manifestations. This group of viruses includes human simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, HHV6A, 6B and 7, and varicella-zoster virus. The viral diseases and cancers they cause are significant and often recurrent. Their prevalence in the developed world accounts for a major burden of disease, and as a result there is a great deal of research into the pathophysiology of infection and immunobiology. Another important area covered within this volume concerns antiviral therapy and the development of vaccines. All these aspects are covered in depth, both scientifically and in terms of clinical guidelines for patient care. The text is illustrated generously throughout and is fully referenced to the latest research and developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an update of Interferon, published in 1969 by Dr. Jan Vilcek. The field of interferon research has since expanded from its former narrow treatment of interferon strictly as an antiviral substance, such that The Interferon System now encompasses cellular modulations ranging from immune alterations to cell proliferative restrictions to antitumor activities. The steadily increasing number of these non-antiviral functions of interferons emphasizes the need for a comprehensive - and critical - review of the entire literature of interferon studies. The text, with its supporting bibliography, provides complete coverage of interferon research. A newcomer to the area should find here all the informa tion necessary to understand why interferon, which has been studied for more than twenty years and which originally stirred excitement over its clinical pros pects, is still inspiring speculation about this potential. For those already fa miliar with the seemingly perpetual clinical promise of interferon, this volume should serve as a valuable reference source, the largest bibliography on the subject ever to appear under one cover. Clearly, this book should be considered only as an introduction to the topic and as a reference source; most questions about the interferon system are still unanswered - even unasked. Hopefully this summation and critical evalua tion of work done to date will stimulate and facilitate further progress. William E. Stewart II New York, N. Y., February 1979 Contents I.
