Book excerpt: This is the extended annotated edition including the rare biographical essay by Edwin E. Slosson called "H. G. Wells - A Major Prophet Of His Time". Mr. Wells's book is brilliant and interesting. The author's social forecast claims to be descriptive of society as it is to be, rather than of society as it ought to be, and it is not, therefore, to be judged as an embodiment of his ideals ; but none the less the nature of his ideals is almost constantly in evidence, and is responsible for the hard, forbidding, and sometimes repulsive character of the society he anticipates. The only light with which his future is to be illumined is that of mechanical science. Mechanical science is the fountain light of all his day, the master-light of all his seeing —not only as regards the future, but largely as regards the past. The triumphs of democracy during the past two centuries he attributes to the advances in mechanics which have given a new industrial order— utterly ignoring the fact that the democratic advance was led by the American colonies, in which the new industrial order had no foothold save in a few cities, and these cities the strongholds of the opponents of the democratic movement.

Book excerpt: This edition includes an extensive and hard to find Lincoln biography by Professor John Frost, L.L.D. It contains all seven original volumesd with all of Lincolm's works from 1832 through 1865. "I have endured," wrote Lincoln not long before his death, "a great deal of ridicule without much malice, and have received a great deal of kindness not quite free from ridicule." On Easter Day, 1865, the world knew how little this ridicule, how much this kindness, had really signified. Thereafter, Lincoln the man became Lincoln the hero, year by year more heroic, until to-day, with the swift passing of those who knew him, his figure grows ever dimmer, less real. This should not be. For Lincoln the man, patient, wise, set in a high resolve, is worth far more than Lincoln the hero, vaguely glorious. Invaluable is the example of the man, intangible that of the hero. And, though it is not for us, as for those who in awed stillness listened at Gettysburg with inspired perception, to know Abraham Lincoln, yet there is for us another way whereby we may attain such knowledge—through his words—uttered in all sincerity to those who loved or hated him. Cold, unsatisfying they may seem, these printed words, while we can yet speak with those who knew him, and look into eyes that once looked into his. But in truth it is here that we find his simple greatness, his great simplicity, and though no man tried less so to show his power, no man has so shown it more clearly.

Book excerpt: Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress: Upon Human Life and Thought In 1901, the great writer and social critic attempted to predict the future in this book, a fascinating mix of accurate forecasts — development of cars, buses and trucks, use of flying machines in combat, decline of permanent marriage — and wild misses, including the prediction that submarines will suffocate their crews and founder at sea. Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress: Upon Human Life and Thought First published in 1904, "Anticipations" is an attempt by H. G. Wells in 1901 to make predictions about the future, especially concerning technological and scientific progress. It offers an interesting look at the technological achievements of the 20th century, with Wells reflecting on some of the less attractive characteristics of a world we have grown beyond, as well as offering a keen insight into social dynamics and the progress it directs. "Anticipations" unsurprisingly presents a fascinating medley of accurate predictions - cars & buses, aerial wartime combat, etc. - and not so accurate ones - submarines being fundamentally flawed. This volume is highly recommended for fans of Wells' seminal work and readers with an interest in the early twentieth century. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War of the Worlds" (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Selection "The most exciting and definitive collection of Lovecraft's work out there." –Danielle Trussoni, New York Times Book Review No lover of gothic literature will want to be without this literary keepsake, the final volume of Leslie Klinger’s tour-de-force chronicle of Lovecraft’s canon. In 2014, The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft was published to widespread acclaim— vaunted as a “treasure trove” (Joyce Carol Oates) for Lovecraft aficionados and general readers, alike. Hailed by Harlan Ellison as an “Olympian landmark of modern gothic literature,” the volume included twenty-two of Lovecraft’s original stories. Now, in this final volume, best- selling author Leslie S. Klinger reanimates twenty-five additional stories, the balance of Lovecraft’s significant fiction, including “Rats in the Wall,” a post– World War I story about the terrors of the past, and the newly contextualized “The Horror at Red Hook,” which recently has been adapted by best- selling novelist Victor LaValle. In following Lovecraft’s own literary trajectory, readers can witness his evolution from Rhode Island critic to prescient literary genius whose titanic influence would only be appreciated decades after his death. Including hundreds of eye- opening annotations and dozens of rare images, Beyond Arkham finally provides the complete picture of Lovecraft’s unparalleled achievements in fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to anticipate and make accurate decisions in a timely manner is fundamental to high-level performance in sport. This is the first book to identify the underlying science behind anticipation and decision making in sport, enhancing our scientific understanding of these phenomena and helping practitioners to develop interventions to facilitate the more rapid acquisition of the perceptual-cognitive skills that underpin these judgements. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach — encompassing research from psychology, biomechanics, neuroscience, physiology, computing science, and performance analysis — the book is divided into three sections. The first section provides a comprehensive analysis of the processes and mechanisms underpinning anticipation and skilled perception in sport. In the second section, the focus shifts towards exploring the science of decision making in sport. The final section is more applied, outlining how the key skills that impact on anticipation and decision making may be facilitated through various training interventions. With chapters written by leading experts from a vast range of countries and continents, no other book offers such a synthesis of the historical development of the field, contemporary research, and future areas for investigation in anticipation and decision making in sport. This is a fascinating and important text for students and researchers in sport psychology, skill acquisition, expert performance, motor learning, motor behaviour, and coaching science, as well as practicing coaches from any sport.
