Book excerpt: From The Adventures of Twizzle (1957) to Thunderbirds Are Go (2015), the many worlds of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson have given great pleasure to television audiences the world over. Even though they are no longer with us, their shows and ideas live on in new versions of classic favourites and development of other ideas and concepts. In Andersons' Supersonic Centuries, critic and essayist Fred McNamara looks at various strands of the Andersons' entertainment output, and assesses their merits, while comparing and contrasting with other shows and concepts. From the early days of Fireball XL-5 (1962) and Stingray (1964), through Thunderbirds (1965) and Captain Scarlet (1967), the live-action Space: 1999 (1975) and UFO (1970), to the modern reimaginings of the classic shows and more, McNamara studies of the worlds, the cities, the equipment, the characters, the hardware, the vehicles and the themes. With a Foreword by UFO actress Ayshea Brough, this is a superb unauthorised and unofficial collection of essays looking at various aspects of the worlds that Gerry and Sylvia Anderson created. Essential reading for anyone interested in the genre!

Book excerpt: Distinguished architect Andrew Andersons has redefined Australia's art galleries over the last five decades (in Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra and regionally) and his award-winning designs have extended the NSW Parliament and transformed the State Library of New South Wales. After two decades in the Government Architect's Branch, Andersons joined PTW Architects for a new period marked by renovation of the Capitol Theatre, design of the City Recital Hall and the Roslyn Packer Theatre, along with offices and major apartment buildings from Bondi to Canberra. Andersons' work has reimagined industrial areas of Sydney's shorelines, transforming Darling Harbour, Walsh Bay, Jones Bay and Barangaroo, and redefined the Sydney Opera House and East Circular Quay as Australia's 'first national precinct' and pre-eminent civic gathering place. In this landmark book, Bernice Murphy and Leon Paroissien draw on interviews and research over many years to illuminate Andersons' life and achievements.

Book excerpt: Sir William "Billy" Connolly, CBE, born on 24th November 1942, on the 3rd floor of 69 Dover Street, Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland, UK is a retired stand-up comedian, musician, presenter, actor, and artist. Billy's Scots nickname is The Big Yin (The Big One). Known for his idiosyncratic, often off-the-cuff observational comedy, often using profanities, Connolly is widely considered to be one of the greatest, most influential stand-up comedians of all time, having topped multiple UK polls. Billy's 1st trade, during the early '60s, was as a welder, being a boilermaker in the Glasgow shipyards until late in the decade, when he began a career as a folk singer. Connolly first sang in the folk rock group The Humblebums, alongside friends Gerry Rafferty and Tam Harvey, with whom he stayed until 1974, before going solo. Billy switched from folk singer with a comedic persona to fully-fledged comedian during the mid. '70s, for which he's now best known. He made his theatrical debut, at the Cottage Theatre in Cumbernauld in 1972, with a revue titled Connolly's Glasgow Flourish, having also played at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His first solo album, Billy Connolly Live!, was produced that year, with a mixture of comedic songs and short monologues. Billy has appeared as an actor in movies including Indecent Proposal (1993), Pocahontas (1995), Muppet Treasure Island (1996), Mrs Brown (1997), for which he was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, The Boondock Saints (1999), The Last Samurai (2003), Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008), Brave (2012), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). On his 75th birthday, 24th November, 2017, three portraits of Connolly were revealed, painted by leading artists Jack Vettriano, John Byrne, and Rachel Maclean, which were later turned into part of Glasgow's official mural trail. Billy was knighted at Buckingham Palace by Prince William during October of that year, for services to entertainment and charity. Connolly announced his retirement from comedy in 2018, having established himself as an artist over recent years. He stated during 2020 "My art is about revealing myself" as he unveiled the 5th issue of his Born on a Rainy Day collection in London.

Book excerpt: Eight gleefully macabre vignettes by an award- winning comics artist, as delightful as they are deadly. Inspired by the dark imagination of Edward Gorey, Envious Siblings is a twisted and hauntingly funny debut. Comics artist Landis Blair interweaves absurdist horror and humor into brief, rhyming vignettes at once transgressive and hilarious. In Blair’s surreal universe, a lost child watches as bewhiskered monsters gobble up her fellow train passengers; a band of kids merrily plays a gut- churning game with playground toys; and two sisters, grinning madly, tear each other apart. These charmingly perverse creations take ordinary settings— a living room, a subway car, a playground— and spin them in a nightmarish direction. Envious Siblings heralds a brilliant new cartooning talent, and will captivate readers who have thrilled to the lurid fantasies of Roald Dahl, Quentin Blake, Charles Addams, Shel Silverstein, and Tim Burton.

From Bulletin Board Systems to blockchain, Weller follows the trajectory of education by focusing each chapter on a technology, theory, or concept that has influenced each year since 1994. Calling for both caution and enthusiasm, Weller advocates for a critical and research-based approach to new technologies, particularly in light of disinformation, the impact of social media on politics, and data surveillance trends. A concise and necessary retrospective, this book will be valuable to educators, ed tech practitioners, and higher education administrators, as well as students.
