Book excerpt: Scattering is the collision of two objects that results in a change of trajectory and energy. For example, in particle physics, such as electrons, photons, or neutrons are "scattered off" of a target specimen, resulting in a different energy and direction. In the field of electromagnetism, scattering is the random diffusion of electromagnetic radiation from air masses is an aid in the long-range sending of radio signals over geographic obstacles such as mountains. This type of scattering, applied to the field of acoustics, is the spreading of sound in many directions due to irregularities in the transmission medium. Volume I of Scattering will be devoted to basic theoretical ideas, approximation methods, numerical techniques and mathematical modeling. Volume II will be concerned with basic experimental techniques, technological practices, and comparisons with relevant theoretical work including seismology, medical applications, meteorological phenomena and astronomy. This reference will be used by researchers and graduate students in physics, applied physics, biophysics, chemical physics, medical physics, acoustics, geosciences, optics, mathematics, and engineering. This is the first encyclopedic-range work on the topic of scattering theory in quantum mechanics, elastodynamics, acoustics, and electromagnetics. It serves as a comprehensive interdisciplinary presentation of scattering and inverse scattering theory and applications in a wide range of scientific fields, with an emphasis, and details, up-to-date developments. Scattering also places an emphasis on the problems that are still in active current research. The first interdisciplinary reference source on scattering to gather all world expertise in this technique Covers the major aspects of scattering in a common language, helping to widening the knowledge of researchers across disciplines The list of editors, associate editors and contributors reads like an international Who's Who in the interdisciplinary field of scattering

Book excerpt: Since 1984, a series of regional conferences on mathematical physics has been organized by physicists from Iran, Pakistan and Turkey to promote the research in mathematical and theoretical physics in the region. This volume, which derives from the XI Regional Conference on Mathematical Physics, comprises 8 review and 44 research articles on the most significant topics in mathematical and theoretical physics such as astrophysics and cosmology, conformal field theory, high energy physics, general relativity and plasma physics. The review articles are comprehensive and self-contained and report on the most important developments in the corresponding subjects. Each review article provides a complete list of references, which is especially useful for graduate students who are just starting their research activities; even ambitious undergraduates in physics can use these review papers as useful background material to go further into the subject and explore the research literature. They are contributed by prominent senior scientists: M Moniez (Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineare, France) and V Sahni (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), India) in Astrophysics and Cosmology, W Nahm (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), Ireland) in Conformal Field Theory, J Lukierski (University of Wroclaw, Poland) in Mathematical Physics, Riazuddin and Fayyazuddin (Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan) in High Energy Physics, N Dadhich (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), India) and A Qadir (National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan) in General Relativity, and N Tsintsadze (Tbilisi State University, Georgia) in Plasma Physics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the course in theoretical nuclear physics that has been given by the author for some years at the T. G. Shevchenko Kiev State University. This version is supplemented and revised to include new results obtained after 1971 and 1975 when the first and second editions were published. This text is intended as an introduction to the nonrelativistic theory of po tential scattering. The analysis is based on the scattering matrix concept where the relationship between the scattering matrix and observable physical quantities is considered. The stationary formulation of the scattering problem is presented; particle wave functions in the external field are obtained. A formulation of the optical theorem is given as well as a discussion on time inversion and the reci procity theorem. Analytic properties of the scattering matrix, dispersion relations, and complex moments are analyzed. The dispersion relations for an arbitrary di rection scattering amplitude are proven, and analytic properties of the amplitude in the plane of the complex cosine of the scattering angle are studied in detail.

Book excerpt: It has been known since the 1930s that quantum mechanics can be formulated in quaternionic as well as complex Hilbert space. But systematic work on the quaternionic extension of standard quantum mechanics has scarcely begun. Authored by a world-renowned theoretical physicist, this booksignals a major conceptual advance and gives a detailed development and exposition of quaternionic quantum mechanics for the purpose of determining whether quaternionic Hilbert space is the appropriate arena for the long sought-after unification of the standard model forces with gravitation.Significant results from earlier literature, together with many new results obtained by the author, are integrated to give a coherent picture of the subject. The book also provides an introduction to the problem of formulating quantum field theories in quaternionic Hilbert space. The book concludeswith a chapter devoted to discussions on where quaternionic quantum mechanics may fit into the physics of unification, experimental and measurement theory issues, and the many open questions that still challenge the field. This well-written treatise is a very significant contribution to theoreticalphysics. It will be eagerly read by a wide range of physicists.
