Book excerpt: The Korean stock market, ranked 11th in the world in terms of market capitalization of stocks in 2017, is a globalized market. Foreign investors hold close to one-third of stocks listed on the Korea Exchange (KRX) as of May 2017 (in terms of market capitalization). The US and the UK alone account for almost 50% of foreign ownership in the KRX. Research or information on the Korean stock market, however, is not well known to the domestic or the global investment communities. There are minimal investment studies that deal with practical issues from the perspective of investment analysts. This volume bridges the academic and investment communities by providing analyses of the Korean stock market that contain practical values. This book comprehensively analyzes anomalies in the Korean stock market, including time series anomalies such as the January effect, cross-sectional anomalies such as the size effect and book-to-market effect, and anomalies related to corporate events. The authors also investigate sales revenue, profitability, valuation (M/B ratio), and the financial risk of listed companies in the Korean stock market at both the sectoral level and industrial level. As the study uses a comprehensive data set and long-term sample period, readers can benefit from consistent and comparable empirical results. Contents: Korean Capital Market Behavioral Approaches Seasonal Anomalies Cross-Sectional Anomalies Corporate Event Industry Analysis Readership: Professional investors and academicians who are interested in the Korean stock market, Korean and foreign institutional investors, graduate scholars studying the Korean stock market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-closed stock market of South Korea opened its doors to foreign investors in January 1992. Due to the success of the Korean economy during the past two decades, the country provides many new and exciting opportunities for foreign investors. This is the first book published in the United States that provides a comprehensive coverage of the Korean securities market. In addition to the structure and trading system of the Korean securities market, the other topics covered range from the Korean economy to a performance analysis of the stock market during the past ten years. The book starts with a discussion of the economic development of South Korea since 1962, which gives an overall picture of the history and current status of the Korean economy. A historical review of the Korean securities market is the next topic, followed by in-depth coverage of administration, laws and taxes, and the trading system of the Korean securities market. A financial analysis of the listed companies and descriptive comments on each industry are provided in chapters 9, 16, and 17. Some miscellaneous topics are covered in the later chapters. These topics include the over-the-counter market, securities financing, securities investment trust, and investment advisory business.

Book excerpt: We investigate how corporate stock returns respond to geopolitical risk in the case of South Korea, which has experienced large and unpredictable geopolitical swings that originate from North Korea. To do so, a monthly index of geopolitical risk from North Korea (the GPRNK index) is constructed using automated keyword searches in South Korean media. The GPRNK index, designed to capture both upside and downside risk, corroborates that geopolitical risk sharply increases with the occurrence of nuclear tests, missile launches, or military confrontations, and decreases significantly around the times of summit meetings or multilateral talks. Using firm-level data, we find that heightened geopolitical risk reduces stock returns, and that the reductions in stock returns are greater especially for large firms, firms with a higher share of domestic investors, and for firms with a higher ratio of fixed assets to total assets. These results suggest that international portfolio diversification and investment irreversibility are important channels through which geopolitical risk affects stock returns.

Book excerpt: This paper presents Financial System Stability Assessment (FSSA) with the Republic of Korea. The Korean authorities have continued their efforts at upgrading the prudential, legal, and supervisory framework for the financial sector, and keeping up with international standards and practices in other G20 jurisdictions. The authorities have been strengthening the system with micro and macroprudential measures against vulnerabilities, strengthening the crisis management framework, and upgrading the prudential and legal framework. The FSSA suggests moving toward a more forward-looking monitoring and systemic risk identification mechanism. The reliability of various stress tests could be augmented with advanced methods, system-wide monitoring, and testing the overall leverage related to residential properties, households’ resilience to adverse shocks, and sovereign contingent liabilities. Stronger focus is required on systemic risks emanating from securities market activities that can amplify contagion, including sudden redemption and liquidity pressures in the funds and asset management industry.

This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of strong performance, Korea’s economy entered a crisis in 1997, owing largely to structural problems in its financial and corporate sectors. These problems emerged in the second half of that year, when the capital inflows that had helped finance Korea’s growth were reversed, as foreign investors—reeling from losses in other Southeast Asian economies—decided to reduce their exposure to Korea. This paper focuses on the sources of the crisis that originated in the financial sector, the measures taken to deal with it, and the evolution of key banking and financial variables in its aftermath.

Book excerpt: This book thoroughly prepares intermediate-level readers for research in social science, organization studies, economics, finance, marketing science, and business science as complex adaptive systems. It presents the advantages of social simulation studies and business intelligence to those who are not familiar with the computational research approach, and offers experienced modelers various instructive examples of using agent-based modeling and business intelligence approaches to inspire their own work. In addition, the book discusses cutting-edge techniques for complex adaptive systems using their applications. To date, business science studies have focused only on data science and analyses of business problems. However, using these studies to enhance the capabilities of conventional techniques in the fields has not been investigated adequately. This book addresses managing the issues of societies, firms, and organizations to profit from interaction with agent-based modeling, human- and computer- mixed systems, and business intelligence approaches, an area that is fundamental for complex but bounded rational business environments. With detailed research by leading authors in the field, Innovative Approaches in Agent-Based Modelling and Business Intelligence inspires readers to join with other disciplines and extend the scope of the book with their own unique contributions. It also includes the common challenges encountered in computational social science and business science to enable researchers, students, and professionals to resolve their own problems.
