Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph instructs the reader on how to analyze the hydrogeochemical vulnerability. It introduces notions of geochemical signals, points of migration of pollutants in the unsaturated zone, and new hydrogeochemical classifications. Three test sites in the USA, Germany, and Moldova are described as case studies accompanied by illustrative data. The authors presuppose for future readers only the background mathematics and elementary knowledge of hydrogeology. The presented methodology is both for local and regional assessments. It is simple, does not need implication of high qualification specialists and can be applied to test the groundwater quality. The book is useful for undergraduate, graduate, master, and PhD students as well as water quality specialists, ecologists and geology professionals.

Book excerpt: In this study, the relationship between various elements has been studied using Cross plots/ratios, correlation analysis, cluster analysis, factor analysis, CEC, OC, NO3-, and Coliform count. Trileaner diagram was also use to determine type of water and this reveal Calcium + Magnesium/Carbonate + Bicarbonate water. The resultant matrix reveals strong correlation of Na+ with Cl-, K+ with Cl-, and Na+ with K+ in all the seasons. Some pairs of species show moderate to strong correlation (r > 0.6), examples NH4+ - NO2-, NH4+ - SO42- (dry season). Bicarbonate was dominant to other anion/cation due to dissolution of carbonates and reaction of silicates with carbonic acid which accounts for the addition of HCO3- to the groundwater. HCO3- also dominates over Ca2, Na+, Mg2+, K+, and SO4 2- in all the Formations, due to silicate weathering. There was also addition of Ca2+, Na+ and removal of SO42- which is due to weathering and leaching of silicate. Ca2+ and Mg2+ show good correlation among themselves and also with Na+, indicating a same source. The major exchangeable ions Na-Cl and Na-k correlate positively and correlation coefficient is found to be same for all the seasons' samples.

Book excerpt: There is an increasing interest in environmental issues. Hydrogeochemistry is very important from viewpoint of environmental impact assessment. Both surface water and ground water are used as sources of water for many purposes. This sub-discipline has been developed due to the importance of water quality issues, and gradually changed into a well established field of research. The study of quantity of water alone is not sufficient to solve the water management problems because its uses for various purposes depend on its quality. In addition, a number of other researchers show that the hydrogeochemical characteristics of ground water and groundwater quality in different aquifers over space and time are important parameters in solving the groundwater management issues. This volume Hydrogeochemistry deals with quality, contamination, chemistry, chemical processes and reactions that take place in various groundwater systems. The purpose of the text is to present comprehensive and practical information necessary for treatment and interpretation of environmental hydrogeochemical data. It provides some baseline data on the geochemical characteristics of the sediments and the water quality. Natural origin of groundwater and groundwater pollution by anthropogenic activities is considered in the groundwater quality analysis for drinking water purpose. Hydrogeochemical processes such as dissolution, precipitation, absorption and desorption, ion exchange reactions and the residence time along the flow path which controls the chemical composition of groundwater, constitutes the other issues that are dealt with in this book. Advances in our ability to quantify these processes will improve our ability to manage our water resources, help us identify potential sources of contamination, and illuminate potential solutions to water-quality problems. To better address societal needs, future advances will require a holistic approach to interpreting geochemical data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on scientific and technological aspects of groundwater-resources assessment and surveillance. It describes relevant risks and investigates selected techniques for the monitoring and mitigation of the individuated threats to groundwater quality. The authors discuss the concepts of groundwater-resources protection and offer examples of both geogenic and anthropogenic degradation of groundwater quality, such as heavy metals from mining activities and natural water-rock interactions, as well as risk of contamination due to geological CO2 storage practices etc. The volume also covers non-invasive monitoring techniques and briefly addresses innovative sensor technologies for the online assessment of water quality. Furthermore, the role played by geochemical techniques, the potential of environmental isotopes and the support provided by physical modelling are highlighted. The chapters guide the reader through various viewpoints, according to the diverse disciplines involved, without aiming to be exhaustive, but instead picking representative topics for their relevance in the context of groundwater protection and control. This book will be of interest to advanced students, researchers, policy-makers and stakeholders at various levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster Novel analytical results of the 25-year investigations of groundwater contamination caused by Chernobyl-born radionuclides The wealth of data on different modes of radioactive transport in the atmosphere, water, and soils, and along the food chains The hydrogeological and physico-chemical processes and factors in groundwater contaminated zones The applicability of commonly used methods of the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability A unique method of fluid dynamics that involves an anomalously fast migration of contaminants through zones of preferential flow from the land surface toward groundwater Building confidence in the assessment of migration pathways of radionuclides in the biosphere Assessment and prediction of the consequences of the nuclear accident, which can shed light on protection from global nuclear accidents Analogue information for different nuclear waste disposal and environmental projects around the world
