Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analog Optical Links presents the basis for the design of analog links. Following an introductory chapter, there is a chapter devoted to the development of the small signal models for common electro-optical components used in both direct and external modulation. However this is not a device book, so the theory of their operation is discussed only insofar as it is helpful in understanding the small signal models that result. These device models are then combined to form a complete link. With these analytical tools in place, a chapter is devoted to examining in detail each of the four primary link parameters; gain, bandwidth, noise figure and dynamic range. Of particular interest is the inter-relation between device and link parameters. A final chapter explores some of the trade offs among the primary link parameters.

This book was released on 2007-05-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many applications, radio frequency (RF) signals need to be transmitted and processed without being digitalized. Optical fiber provides a transmission medium in which RF modulated optical carriers can be transmitted and distributed with very low loss, making it more efficient and less costly than conventional electronic systems. This volume presents a review of RF photonic components, transmission systems, and signal processing examples in optical fibers from leading academic, government, and industry scientists working in this field. It also introduces the reader to various related technologies such as direct modulation of laser sources, external modulation techniques, and detectors. The text is aimed at engineers and scientists engaged in the research and development of optical fibers and analog RF applications. With an emphasis on design, performance and practical application, this book will be of particular interest to those developing systems based on this technology.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide a step-by-step guide to all design aspects and tradeoffs from theory to application for fiber-optics transceiver electronics. Presenting a compendium of information in a structured way, this book enables the engineer to develop a methodical design approach, a deep understanding of specifications parameters and the reasons behind them, as well as their effects and consequences on system performance, which are essential for proper component design. Further, a fundamental understanding of RF, digital circuit design, and linear and nonlinear phenomena is important in order to achieve the desired performance levels. Becoming familiar with solid-state devices and passives used to build optical receivers and transmitters is also important so one can effectively overcome design limitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource to designing and constructing analog photonic links capable of high RF performance Fundamentals of Microwave Photonics provides a comprehensive description of analog optical links from basic principles to applications. The book is organized into four parts. The first begins with a historical perspective of microwave photonics, listing the advantages of fiber optic links and delineating analog vs. digital links. The second section covers basic principles associated with microwave photonics in both the RF and optical domains. The third focuses on analog modulation formats—starting with a concept, deriving the RF performance metrics from basic physical models, and then analyzing issues specific to each format. The final part examines applications of microwave photonics, including analog receive-mode systems, high-power photodiodes applications, radio astronomy, and arbitrary waveform generation. Covers fundamental concepts including basic treatments of noise, sources of distortion and propagation effects Provides design equations in easy-to-use forms as quick reference Examines analog photonic link architectures along with their application to RF systems A thorough treatment of microwave photonics, Fundamentals of Microwave Photonics will be an essential resource in the laboratory, field, or during design meetings. The authors have more than 55 years of combined professional experience in microwave photonics and have published more than 250 associated works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linearization of optical links is imperative for obtaining the maximum dynamic range in an analog link. This dissertation presents an Electronic Linearization method of adaptively linearizing links that are limited by different sources of nonlinearities. Second order and third order distortions arising at the transmitter end in externally and directly modulated links have been suppressed by Predistortion Linearization to give Spurious Free Dynamic Range improvements of as much as 12 dB. A WDM technique for high sensitivity detection of distortions has been proposed and demonstrated for externally modulated links. Further on, a theoretical study of applying Predistortion to baseband signals for linearizing passband links with the signals upconverted to GHz frequencies has been carried out to show that single sideband modulation has distinct advantages over double sideband modulation. The dissertation then explores the nonlinearities produced at the receiver end due to photodetector saturation in intensity modulated links as well as from coherent detection of phase modulated links. Theoretical models and expressions for the dynamic range have been derived, followed by the experimental demonstration of Postdistortion Linearization of both links. The dynamic range was shown to achieve the RIN noise limit with improvements of more than 5 dB in 3rd order and 16 dB in 2nd order limited dynamic range, respectively for the intensity modulated links. Improvements of 2.4 dB were obtained for the phase modulated links. The principle of baseband linearization for passband signals has been applied to these coherently detected links. In an independent approach towards increasing the capacity of an optical link, an uncoordinated optical multiple access system using novel nonlinear trellis codes was also set up and demonstrated to give Bit Error Rates of less than 10-9 for a system with six users, with all interfering users treated as noise.
