Book excerpt: This audit technique guide was written and compiled, by and for Internal Revenue agents, to be used in the examinations of returns of the scrap metal industry. These examinations include returns for both purchasers and sellers of scrap metal. The purpose of the guide is to promote uniformity and consistency in examinations and in the application of tax laws. While the information compiled in the guide sets forth a general overview of the industry, it is not intended to be all-inclusive, and agents should consider any local information that pertains to their examinations. We want to acknowledge our appreciation to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) for providing us with background information about the industry and allowing us to use excerpts from their publications.

Book excerpt: - In 2003, four mining shares rose over four times in price, with one gaining ten times.- In just the first two months of 2004, 26 mining shares increased more than 20%, with five shares doubling.- Merrill Lynch's World Mining Trust is the UK's best performing fund over the past three years, having risen by over 200 per cent. But is the mining boom about to end?Not according to this book, by Michael Coulson, Chairman of the Association of Mining Analysts. Coulson argues that, if anything, we are still in the early stages of prolonged strength in mining stocks and despite what some commentators are saying, the boom is far from over.FROM THE BACK COVERThe prospect of instant riches gives the mining sector an obvious glamour. And when the mining sector begins to run it can be an awesome sight and the excitement generated can be every bit as seductive and heady as that which enveloped markets during the internet boom. But due to the counter-cyclical nature of many mining stocks, they can also offer a valuable refuge when stock markets turn down. In this book, Michael Coulson gives a masterly overview of the sector, explains both the rewards and the pitfalls of investing in mining shares and argues convincingly that mining should once again form a core sector for all investors. The book is for anyone interested in mining, and particularly mining as an investment. Whilst it contains material which will be useful to even experienced followers of the sector, its main target is those who are interested in mining but perhaps not particularly familiar with the sector, and would like to know more. All the subjects are covered that are fundamental to acquiring sufficient knowledge about the miningsector to invest in it with confidence. While the mining s

Book excerpt: "A Fortune in Scrap - Secrets of the Scrap Metal Industry" written by industry veteran, Ken Burtwell, describes how reclamation is vital to the national economy and ranks high on the list of the nation's largest industries. We're not talking recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans here - sure, that's something all of us can do, but what the average person doesn't know is the "hidden scrap" that's not obvious to the casual observer - and when salvaged properly - is worth a fortune!Ken shows you how to identify different metals with magnets and chemical tests and you'll learn how to prepare them for sale to get the BIGGEST BUCKS possible. Prep tools such as "Flame Cutting" and the awesome power of the "Thermic Lance" are described. From bridges and old buildings to old locomotives and the rails they run on, Ken covers this and shows you his (old) photos of buildings being demolished and their hidden gems. This is an example of BIG RECYCLING, and is a necessary process both from an economical and environmental point of view as there is a reduced demand on the Earth's natural resources.Included are formulas for estimating weights of steel drums, and tables showing weight-per-pound for different metal thicknesses. After reading Ken's "A Fortune in Scrap", you'll agree that recycling today is BIG BUSINESS and those having the moxie to forge ahead will be well rewarded.Topics covered in the book are:- Steel- The Scrap Dealer or Collector- Flame Cutting Steel Scrap- Better Grade - More Value- Metal Scrap from Demolition- The Thermic Lance (aka Thermal Lance)- Railroads and Rail Vehicles- Reclamation Equipment- Sheet Steel Gauges and Weights- More Valuable Scrap Metals- Common Metals: Lead And Zinc- Less Common Metals and Where To Find Them- Identification of Metals- Magnetic Testing- Government Scrap Sales- Precious Metals- Silver Coins- Testing Various Metals- Scrap DealersTHANK YOU for reading the description of this very interesting book and we hope you enjoy your purchase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 provides a mandatory licensing regime for the metal recycling industry, which is worth about £7 billion per annum. It bans trading in cash and creates new criminal offences that carry unlimited fines. Since it came into force on 1 October 2013, there has been no case law clarifying its meaning and scope, although its meaning is potentially broad, and perhaps broader than was intended. In the absence of guidance from the courts, this book aims to place the Act in context and highlight its ambiguities and possibilities. It contains a chapter on data protection, as an extension of the Act's identity and record keeping requirements. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mariel Irvine, solicitor and principal of Mariel Irvine Solicitors, founded the firm in 2002, after some years as a partner in an insurance litigation firm in the City. She advised the police, insurers and the metal recycling industry on the drafting of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and also its subsequent review by the Home Office in 2017. Scrap metal dealers come to her for advice on licensing, and also compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. Insurers, police, the Prison Governors' Association, the Police Superintendents' Association, the British Metal Recycling Association and others regularly instruct her regarding assault, stress at work and harassment claims; inquests and inquiries; pay, discrimination and other employment disputes; and privacy and data protection issues. Chambers has recommended Mariel as a leading practitioner in Police Law over a number of years. In 2018 the Parliamentary Review, an independent publication which aims to share best practice among policy makers and business leaders, invited her to contribute to their inaugural Law and Justice Review, as a best practice representative. She regularly gives presentations and seminars.
