Book excerpt: Tracing the roots of the conflict into the first half of the nineteenth century, Dr. Smith shows how the conflict between Britain and the Transvaal republic intensified after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886. The resulting wealth and the influx of foreign, mainly British, Uitlanders transformed what had been a poor land-locked Boer republic into the hub round which the future of South Africa was to turn.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete History of the South African War, in 1899-1902 In order to publish a work of this kind immediately on the termination of hostilities, it becomes inevitable that the course of events should be recorded chronologically rather than that any department of the campaign should be dealt with consecutively and finally by itself. This imperative method has the advantage of showing the daily development of events over the whole area of the war, while it has what may be considered the drawback of discursiveness from the introduction of innumerable facts and features of the struggle without any immediate connection with each other. When the effort is to present a history of facts as complete as possible for research, rather than a picturesque story of leading battles, this compilation of heterogeneous matter is unavoidable, even if classified under many headings. There is one set off to discursiveness. An exhaustive, sustained, and graphic description of a number of battles, one after the other, is a strain upon the feelings that is neither pleasant nor wholesome. In order to wade through and grasp the whole of the details with intelligence and composure, there must be the mental relief afforded by the admixture of diversified particulars. Many events have been stated in briefest form. To paint everything in strong colours and in mlnutiœ would give scope for fine writing and piquant reading, but the chronicle could not also be compressed into a cheap, single, popular volume for the million. The Boers proved to be formidable opponents, masterfully compensating for inferior numbers with grim determination, resourcefulness and strong religious faith. Their mobility, expert use of cover, and knowledge of the terrain, in which they employed powerful long-range magazine rifles, gave them initial advantages. By contrast the British suffered from inadequate transport, insufficient mounted troops and poor intelligence. Despite marshalling the immense resources of their empire, the British were to be severely tested in a war which one general described as 'the graveyard of many a soldier's reputation'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African or Anglo-Boer War rounded off the British conquest of Southern Africa. While ultimate British victory was scarcely in doubt, the unsettling experience of having to field an army of 450,000 troops to break two of the world's tiniest agrarian states gave imperial society much to reflect upon, both during and after the conflict. To the Boer 'bittereinders' the outcome of the war was never anything other than a humiliation. Yet the defeat of Boer interests was less evident. Although much of the black population became involved in the conflict, white supremacy remained intact; and the successes of the Boers in the field, as well as the trials and tribulations of their families in defeat, restoked a nationalist Afrikaner identity, which would go on to become a key element in the policy of apartheid. Only now, a hundred years later, are some of the more baleful legacies of the war being addressed. Bill Nasson's lively new history is a crisp, up-to-date account not only of the military struggle but also of the whole web of miscalculations and shattered illusions that surrounded it and spread far beyond the battlefields.
