Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Argument for Ireland To delay the appearance of the work for some months longer would have been, in some measure, to defeat its object, which was, to have before the public, from an early period of the approaching parliamentary session, a compilation, as compact as possible, of the leading facts and arguments bearing on the question of the Repeal of the Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. He was not far wrong, for it is perfectly true that for close upon a century the Nationalist party has dominated with local grievances the whole course of Imperial policy. Nevertheless the Irish Question is not, intrinsically, a party question at all, nor indeed should it ever have been allowed to become one. It shall therefore be the primary intention of this volume to analyse the situation down to those constituent elements into which it must eventually resolve itself before its anomalous factors can be discussed; polities proper will be introduced only when they become absolutely essential to a right understanding of the tangle into which they have thrown economic controversies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Orators: A History of Ireland's Fight for Freedom It would have been unfortunate if the author of this volume had not placed it in the hands of the public. His demand and success 0.3 a public speaker upon Irish topics led him to a deep study of the history of that glorious nation, and the deeper he studied the more fascinated ho became. His work is imbued with the spirit of his own researches and in turn fascinates the reader. Among the great men who pass in review, Daniel O'Connell is given high place and justly so, for he was a most worthy leader of the people for over a generation. His preeminence recalls the estimation of him held by the Count de Montalembert who said that O'Connell was the finest orator whom he had listened to, or whose works he had read. The reader will find this valuable contribution to the story of Ireland's greatness impartial, instructive and interesting and of such appeal that he will not be satisfied until he reads to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the ways in which works of Classical literature influenced and were received by the native Irish tradition. Original, innovative work which elucidates a number of individual narratives; but more significantly, by placing these texts in their proper intellectual context, the author demonstrates how the world of learning in eleventh- andtwelfth-century Ireland really worked. He illuminates a world of medieval education and scholarship; he tells us (as no-one has done previously) what medieval Irish classicism was all about. Dr Máire ni Mhaonaigh, St John's College, University of Cambridge. The puzzle of Ireland's role in the preservation of classical learning into the middle ages has always excited scholars, but the evidence from the island's vernacular literature - as opposed to that in Latin - for the study of pagan epic has largely escaped notice. In this book the author breaks new ground by examining the Irish texts alongside the Latin evidence for the study of classical epic in medieval Ireland, surveying the corpus of Irish texts based on histories and poetry from antiquity, in particular Togail Troi, the Irish history of the Fall of Troy. He argues that Irish scholars' study of Virgil and Statius in particularleft a profound imprint on the native heroic literature, especially the Irish prose epic Táin Bó Cúailnge ("The Cattle-Raid of Cooley"). BRENT MILES is a Fellow in Early and Medieval Irish, University College Cork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forgotten Facts of Irish History Love of one's country is generally accompanied by a knowledge of its history. In Ireland, where this love prevails to an exceptional degree, we might expect to find an intimacy with Irish history exceptionally wide-spread and accurate. This expectation is all the more reasonable because of the existence of bitter religious and political strife concerning, chiefly, wrongs and tyrannies alleged to have been inflicted in the past. Nations, or communities, no matter how bad their motives may be, do not, as a rule, engage in warlike conflict until they have carefully inquired into the subjects concerning which their disputes have arisen. To this rule the treatment which Irish history has received forms a remarkable and painful exception. The animosities for which the country is notorious are almost wholly the outcome of events within the last seven hundred years, that is, during English rule in Ireland; yet the history of the greater part of that period is, to the masses of the Irish people, a sealed book.
