Book excerpt: As a cultural and political commentator, Stanley Crouch in unapologetically contentious and delightfully iconoclastic. Whether he is writing on the uniqueness of the American South, the death of Tupak Shakur, the O.J. Simpson verdict, or the damage done by the Oklahoma City bombing, Crouch's high-velocity exchange with American culture is conducted with scrupulous allegiance to the truth, even when it hurts—and it usually does. And on the subject of jazz—from Sidney Bechet to Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington to Miles Davis—there is no one more articulate, impassioned, and encyclopedic in his knowledge than Stanley Crouch. Crouch approaches everything in his path with head-on energy, restless intelligence, and a refreshing faith in the collective experiment that is America—and he does so in a virtuosic prose style that is never less than thrilling.

Margaret, a resourceful midwife, is living with the insufferable relatives of her third husband, Gilbert de Vilers, known as Gregory. She is carving out a life for herself and her daughters despite the hostility and greed of her in-laws. But when Gregory is captured in France and held for ransom, Margaret knows she must take action—her in-laws are too tight with money to be of any use—so she teams up with her old friends Mother Hilde, the herbalist, and Brother Malachi, an alchemist on a quest for the secret of changing base metals into gold. Together, the trio plan to rescue Gregory and bring him back to London, where he and Margaret can start a new life away from his meddling family. And thus begins a wild romp across fourteenth-century Europe. Murderous noblemen, scheming ladies, truculent ghosts, and a steady stream of challenges plague the journey. Margaret will need not only her special gift of healing, her quick mind, and her independent spirit but the loyalty of her friends and the love of her new husband to carry them all safely home.

General managers and fans alike have pondered this most important of baseball questions. The Moneyball strategy is not the first example of how new ideas and innovative management have transformed the way teams are assembled. In Pursuit of Pennants examines and analyzes a number of compelling, winning baseball teams over the past hundred-plus years, focusing on their decision making and how they assembled their championship teams. Whether through scouting, integration, instruction, expansion, free agency, or modernizing their management structure, each winning team and each era had its own version of Moneyball, where front office decisions often made the difference. Mark L. Armour and Daniel R. Levitt show how these teams succeeded and how they relied on talent both on the field and in the front office. While there is no recipe for guaranteed success in a competitive, ever-changing environment, these teams demonstrate how creatively thinking about one’s circumstances can often lead to a competitive advantage. Book excerpt: The true story behind the ITV series, Stephen Former Detective Chief Inspector Clive Driscoll is most famous for being the man who finally secured convictions for the murder of Stephen Lawrence, a case previously mired by claims of institutional racism and corruption. For Clive, it was the pinnacle of a 35-year career with the world's most famous police force, the Metropolitan Police Service. Clive's prodigious rise through the ranks of the Met saw him front some of the most high-profile units at Scotland Yard. He was put in charge of their policy for sexual offences, domestic violence, child protection and the paedophile unit before heading up the Racial and Violent Crime Task Force tackling their backlist of cold cases. From action-packed moments chasing down criminals to more tender occasions, like gaining the trust of a murder victim's family, to making crucial legal history, and unearthing huge national scandals, In Pursuit of the Truth is the definitive account of modern day policing, its successes and failings included, seen through the eyes of a man who has dedicated his life to making a difference. This is a book that every part of society can learn from.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Normandy to the Caribbean Islands, this innovative biographical pursuit follows Adèle Hugo on her reckless journey of unrequited love – and the writer who chased after her more than 150 years later. It's 1863. The daughter of the most famous writer in the world, Victor Hugo, who has ambitions as a writer and composer, suddenly leaves her family's home on the Channel Islands bound for Nova Scotia. She is in pursuit of a young British soldier, with whom she is desperately in love, but who has rejected her. Eight years later, after stalking him to the Caribbean, where he's stationed with the army, Adèle Hugo is brought back to Paris by a benevolent former slave woman who has taken pity on her. She is admitted to an asylum where she dies decades later, rich from the inheritance of the rights to her father's books. This story of hopeless love has inspired writers, composers, and a well-known film by François Truffaut. Yet much about Adèle Hugo's tragic life has remained shrouded in mystery – not least the true character and identity of the soldier who ultimately contributed to her undoing. Mark Bostridge was drawn to Adèle's story in his twenties, thanks in part to the François Truffaut film, and has been following her story ever since. Now he sets out in pursuit of the truth about her, travelling halfway across the world, acting as sleuth and tracking down the descendants of the soldier she loved. In so doing he recognises the source of his fascination with the aspects of Adèle's life that reflect and parallel his own. The result is a moving book about the pain of loving too much and of parents loving too little; about the ways in which we are haunted by the dead; and about our insatiable appetite for other people's stories which possess us and invade our own lives. In Pursuit of Love is part memoir and part travelogue, as well as an invigorating new approach to the writing of biography.

Book excerpt: In l967, when Georgene Dreishpoon and her husband Irving read a National Geographic article about the Bahamas, a mental seed was planted that would sprout seven years later when they embarked on an unforgettable and magical ferry ride to the island of Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas. In her fascinating memoir, Pursuit of Paradise, Dreishpoon shares her experiences as a member of an American family who sought a fishing retreat in the Bahamas and, in the process, discovered lifelong friendships and ultimately faced the fact that even in paradise, the realities of life lurk in the background. For sixty days a year, the Dreishpoons left their life in America and lived on an island that captured their imaginations and their souls. Through entertaining anecdotes, Dreishpoon provides a glimpse into how her family immersed themselves in a new culture, learned to communicate with local inhabitants, and acquired a taste for new food—all while cherishing their time together as they experienced a new adventure. Pursuit of Paradise chronicles nearly twenty-five years of amazing stories of one family’s extraordinary experiences on a beautiful Bahamian island that affected their philosophy of living and loving forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a life story of a Hungarian refugee born in Slovakia in 1938 amidst the beginning of World War II. Parents were a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. Following the end of WWII, the Krieser family moved to Hungary, and Tom escaped directly following the Hungarian Revolution against Soviet Russia, which was crushed by the Red Army. Arriving in Canada with nothing but a diary, a birth certificate, and a determination to succeed, Tom was lucky enough to meet up with the Sheehan family, who helped to determine much of Tom's future. The Sheehans helped Tom attend and successfully graduate in engineering from St. FX University. It was in the town of Saint John, New Brunswick (Canada), that Tom met his wife-to-be Jane O'Leary. They married in 1960 and had two children (Paul and Mark in 1961 and 1963, respectively) growing up in Montreal, Canada. Tom's career commenced as a young engineer, but over the years, he eventually was elevated to become the president and CEO of one of Canada's best recognized pulp and paper machinery manufacturing enterprises with up to five hundred employees. Surrounded by a great team of professionals and many great customers in a dynamic, competitive, yet surprisingly friendly business environment, the company became known for its research and development activities, machinery innovation, and commitment to deliver value to its customers the world over. Despite the enormous stress of the job he held, Tom found time to dedicate much attention to his kids (having become a spokesperson for the English section of the Quebec PTA [Parent Teacher Association]) and his church, including leadership positions in the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement. Tom even became a deacon in the Catholic Church in the diocese of Montreal. Tom's marriage to Jane came to an end in 1989, and in 1993, Tom married his wife of today, Linda Thibodeau. Linda's daughter became like Tom's own, and that is a story in its own. Tom and Linda live in beautiful Naples, Florida, today. The book is full of twists and turns with experiences gained through a very enriching life and extensive business, family, and traveling adventures. Tom still works today because he loves what he does and thrives to be the best in all things he undertakes. This book is a product of his love of family, business, friends, and life.
