Book excerpt: This book analyzes how and under what conditions collaborating corporations can effectively manage relationships with their suppliers in order to decrease the risk of suppliers’ noncompliance with codes of conduct and standards. In so doing, it represents an important addition to the management literature on corporate social responsibility in global supply chains – which is highly topical at a time when companies are increasingly aware of the social and environmental aspects of global sourcing. After an opening systematic review of the literature on agency theory and supply chain management, it explores the rationale underlying collaboration among competitors, and the most critical aspects of such collaboration, in depth. Thanks to the book’s use of real-life examples, readers will learn how agency theory can help improve relationship management and address the major issues in sustainable global sourcing.

Today consumers pay attention to the environmental impacts and social consequences of the products they use. Consequently, an increase in interest in the topic from an industry perspective has been observed and the topic is considered a megatrend in today’s global economy worthy of additional academic inquiry. This dissertation looks into the role that sustainability plays for companies in the current business environment and its effect on supply chain relationships. This book highlights the effects that introducing sustainability to a supply chain relationship has on the dynamics and structure of these relationships and provides a novel methodological approach to examine the issue. For the analysis, a theoretical framework of current management theories is assembled and the insights of each theory for sustainability in supply chain management are detailed. Through a qualitative and a quantitative research phase, the findings of this dissertation show, that sustainability and collaborative behavior in supply chain relationships positively affect each other. This manuscript provides insights for both research and practice. Theoretical and managerial implications are detailed and the findings are mirrored with the derived theoretical framework. This book therefore helps to promote the effective implementation of sustainability in supply chain management practice and elaborates the theory around the topic.

Book excerpt: This article reviews important and diverse issues that can affect family business goals, which scholars can consider in their future research. A systematic review was undertaken in three different areas: family businesses goals, sustainable supply chain and platform economy. The three topics were reviewed in terms of the theories utilised in the studied articles. Two theories (institutional and social exchange) were found to be common across the three topics. As a result, family businesses goals, sustainable supply chain and platform economy were reviewed through the lenses of the institutional and social exchange theories. We conclude by discussing directions for future research and other promising approaches, so as to inform the investigation concerning family businesses, and the expected contemporary goals to pursue in relation to sustainable supply chain and platform economy.

From an ecological perspective, the current worldwide resource footprint requires approximately 1.5 planets to sustain existing life, and with current usage would require two planets by 2030. The social impact of ever-growing resource use disproportionately affects the world’s poor – the 3 billion people living on less than $2.50 a day, as they struggle to acquire what is needed to survive. The serious ecological and social challenges we face in trying to establish global sustainable supply chains must not be underestimated, yet so far research has largely ignored the social dimension in favour of the environmental and economic. So how can we develop business strategies that move away from a primary economic focus and give equal weight to people, planet and profit? How can we create sustainable supply chains that take a true triple-bottom-line approach?Implementing Triple Bottom Line Sustainability into Global Supply Chains features innovative research, highlighting new cases, approaches and concepts in how to successfully implement sustainability – covering economic, ecological and social dimensions – into global supply chains. The four parts cover the rationale for sustainable global supply chains, key enablers, case studies showing clear implementation steps, and directions for future research and development. This book is a must-read for any academic researching in sustainable supply chain management, procurement or business strategy, and for business leaders seeking cases that will inform a critical step forward for CSR programmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equity owners are often blamed for the unsustainable behaviors of other supply chain members. Recent events show that focal firms may face reputational and financial damages when such misconducts are exposed. However, controlling sub-suppliers can be challenging due to the high supply chain complexity, lack of contractual relation, and the large distance between the supply chain members. Focal firms adopt different governance strategies to improve sustainability performance, but it is unclear how the behavioral and contextual contingencies affect the sustainability performance of sub-suppliers. To explore this issue, the current study employs agent-based modeling and uses agency theory as an interpretive lens. The results shed light on how sustainability performance of sub-suppliers is impacted by (1) risk-aversion of supply chain members, (2) the cost of monitoring and the cost of undertaking sustainability practices, (3) varying information asymmetry between the focal buyer, intermediary supplier, and focal supplier, (4) stakeholder pressure, (5) and supply chain power.
