Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures With Books and Autographs This is the book for which the world has waited so long and patiently and to which all that has gone before has been in the nature of preparation. It has been in the making for over forty years, coinciding with the author 's term of service in this mortal penitentiary. He started taking notes for it at the age of two, observing attentively all that happened and resorting to eminent authorities, such as his mother and his nurse, for exposition and corroboration. In order to qualify himself for the task he studied penmanship, cultivating speed and inaccuracy until now he greatly prefers a letter written by a world-famous celebrity to one written by himself. For his possession of such marvelously acute powers of observation, which must impress the reader at the outset, the author can offer no explanation, but possible investigators may find significance in the fact that many years of his life were spent in riding on the New York subway, succeeded by other years spent in riding on the Illinois Central. His graces of style have been developed through conversation with his wife and diligent reading of the daily papers. En passant be it remarked that much useful information can be gleaned from the daily papers if one only knows where to look for it. Books have been much written about, but the literature of autograph collecting is familiar only to initiates. Until this work was written, the books on the subject were few and out standing (they still are). In 1918, Mr. A. Edward Newton, who was lying flat on his back under the Atlantic Monthly tree, trying to discover the secret of successful authorship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Bobby Orde At nine o'clock one morning Bobby Orde, following an agreement with his father, walked sedately to the Proper Place, where he kept his cap and coat and other belongings. The Proper Place was a small, dark closet under the angle of the stairs. He called it the Proper Place just as he called his friend Clifford Fuller, or the saw-mill town in which he lived Monrovia - because he had always heard it called so. At the door a beautiful black and white setter solemnly joined him. "Hullo, Duke!" greeted Bobby. The dog swept back and forth his magnificent feather tail, and fell in behind his young master. B obby knew the way perfectly. You went to the fire-engine house; and then to the left after the court-house was Mr. Proctor's; and then, all at once, the town. Father's office was in the nearest square brick block. Bobby paused. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Jimmie Dale Could there be any doubt that Jimmie Dale was innately a gentleman? It was evening, and Jimmie Dale sat at a small table in the corner of the St. James Club dining room. Opposite him sat Herman Carruthers, a young man of his own age, about twenty-six, a leading figure in the newspaper world, whose rise from reporter to managing editor of the morning News Argus within the short space of a few years had been almost meteoric. They were at coffee and cigars, and Jimmie Dale was leaning back in his chair, his dark eyes fixed interestedly on his guest.
