Book excerpt: In the spring of 1830, Leonard, a native of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, ventured to embark in an expedition across the Rocky Mountains, an expedition which lasted over five years. Written in response to popular demand, so to speak, Leonard's account of these years, based in large part on a minute journal of every incident that occurred, is recognized as one of the fundamental sources on the exploration of the American West. His travels traced the Kansas, Republican, Platte, Sweetwater, Big Horn Yellowstone, Snake, Humboldt, and San Joaquin Rivers, all the way to San Francisco Bay and Monterey. A free trapper until the summer of 1833, when he entered the employ of Captain B.L.E. Bonneville, Leonard was part of the group sent under command of Captain Joseph Walker to explore the Great Salt Lake region - an expedition that resulted in Capt. Joseph Reddeford Walker's discovery of the overland route to California. The Narrative ends in August 1835, with Leonard's return to Independence.

Book excerpt: "Narrative of the Adventures of Zenas Leonard" is a journal describing the adventures of a company of 70 men, who left St. Louis in the Spring of 1831, on an expedition to the Rocky Mountains, for the purpose of trapping for Furs, and trading with the Indians. Zenas Leonard's narrative is comprised of a minute description of the incidents of the adventure, and a valuable history of this immense territory — not from maps and charts, but from personal observation. Zenas Leonard (1809 – 1857) was an American mountain man, explorer and trader. He was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. As a young adult, he worked for his uncle in Pittsburgh before moving to St. Louis and working as a clerk for the fur company, Gannt and Blackwell. In 1831 Leonard went with Gant and Blackwell's company of about 70 men on a trapping and trading expedition. They survived, in part, by trading with Native Americans. Among the more helpful tribal members he reported encountering was a negro who claimed to have been on Lewis & Clark's expedition, and who may have been the explorer-slave York. In 1835 Leonard returned to Independence, Missouri with enough wealth in furs to establish a store and trading post at Fort Osage. He continued to trade along the river for the rest of his life.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1830, Leonard, a native of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, "ventured to embark in an expedition across the Rocky Mountains, in the capacity of clerk to the company. The last letter received by his parents, left him at the extreme white settlement [Independence, Missouri], where they were busily occupied in making preparations for the expedition to the mountains-from whence he promised to write at short intervals; but one misfortune after another happening to the company, he was deprived of all sources of communication-so that no tidings were received of him until he unexpectedly returned to the scenes of his childhood, to the house of his father, in the fall of 1835-after an absence of 5 years and 6 months!" Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventure of Zenas Leonard: Fur Trader and Trapper, 1831-1836 HE evolution of the trapper may be traced far back T to the old French régime when the coureurs des bois, rangers of the woods, or the peddlers of the wilderness, held sway; these were, however, more traders than trappers, and purchased the pelts from the Indians for trifles, and frequently accompanied them on their hunting excursions. They were as profligate as their successors, and their occupation passed away with the passing of the French control of Canada and with the establishment of the interior trading-posts by the merchants of Canada, who later formed companies and conducted the business in a more systematic manner. From these interior trading posts traders and trappers were sent out to trade with the Indians and trap in their territory at the same time. The trading gradually fell into the hands of the trading-posts the trapper meanwhile pursued his vocation, and it became his recognized and established business, and he remained an important factor in the fur-trade down to the time of its decline and ultimate death. While Mr. Hunt was at Mackinaw engaging men for the Astoria venture, there arrived at this place some of these characters, and his description of them is so accurate that I take the liberty of giving it here.
