Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the new era of modern retinal laser therapy and its clinical applications. While the photocoagulation era universally presupposed the therapeutic necessity of laser-induced retinal damage, the modern retinal laser therapy is equally opposed to this idea. The evidence for this sea-change in the understanding of retinal laser is well presented within this book, and the conceptual and clinical consequences are discussed with particular emphasis on the emergence of retinal laser therapy as the first reasonable preventive and restorative intervention for the most important retinal disorders. Finally, the future of modern retinal laser therapy is highlighted with respect to coming technological advances, remaining challenges, and the place of retinal laser in the management of retinal disease. This book is an essential resource for all ophthalmic residents and clinicians seeking a clear and concise guide to modern retinal laser therapy in their everyday practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Ophthalmology focuses on developments in ophthalmology, including therapy, keratotomy, phototoxicity, and retinopathy. The compilation first offers information on the therapy of herpes simplex, anterior segment surgery, and use of viscous and viscoelastic substances in ophthalmology. Topics include systemic antiviral agents and ocular disease; influence of new instruments and technology; criteria for the selection of viscous or viscoelastic material; and indications for the use of viscous substances. The text then ponders on radial keratotomy, intraocular lenses, and treatment of congenital cataracts. The publication takes a look at ocular phototoxicity and vitreous surgery, as well as proliferative diabetic retinopathy, posterior penetrating trauma, effects of non-ionizing radiation on biological systems, body temperature and light damage, and retinal photodamage. The text also touches on the management of diabetic retinopathy; treatment of malignant melanomas of the posterior uvea; and macular disease with serious retinal detachment. The compilation is highly recommended for ophthalmologists and readers interested in the developments in ophthalmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nd:YAG laser has finally become the multidisciplinary and muitispeciaity tool of the 1980s. Primarily developed for gastrointestinal applications for controlling bleeding, at present it is also used for endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, endobronchial cancer, and bladder and gynecological lesions and finding applications in otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery. De velopment of laser scalpels and focusing head-pieces has now allowed the Nd:YAG laser to be used for open surgical procedures in general and plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, urology, gynecology, dermatology, and neu rosurgery. The rapid development in ceramic technology has led to contact surgery allowing physicians a choice of excision, vaporization, coagulation, incision, or combinations thereof by easily changing probes rather than having to select new laser wavelengths. This technology is rapidly replacing the carbon dioxide laser which currently has no adequate flexible waveguide for fiberoptic en doscopy, cannot be used in a water medium (e.g., bladder), and has poor coagulation properties when compared to the Nd:YAG laser. Future developments may see the Nd:YAG laser even replacing electro cautery in the operating room due to its greater safety and efficacy. Local hyperthermia (laserthermia) with computer control, photodynamic therapy, and ophthalmic applications make the Nd:YAG laser the most exciting tech nological advancement in medicine and surgery for the 1980s.
