Book excerpt: Abraham is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Frederick Brotherton Meyer 1847 - 1929 Meyer was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England, born in London. He attended Brighton College and graduated from London University in 1869. He studied theology at Regents Park Baptist College. Meyer began pastoring churches in 1870. His first pastorate was at Pembroke Baptist Chapel in Liverpool. In 1872 he pastored Priory Street Baptist Church in York. While he was there he met the American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, whom he introduced to other churches in England. The two preachers became lifelong friends. In 1895 Meyer went to Christ Church in Lambeth. At the time only 100 people attended the church, but within two years over 2,000 were regularly attending. He stayed there for fifteen years, and then began a traveling to preach at conferences and evangelistic services. His evangelistic tours included South Africa and Asia. He also visited the United States and Canada several times. He spent the last few years of his life working as a pastor in England's churches, but still made trips to North America, including one he made at age 80. Meyer was part of the Higher Life movement and preached often at the Keswick Convention. He was known as a crusader against immorality. He preached against drunkenness and prostitution. He is said to have brought about the closing of hundreds of saloons and brothels. Meyer wrote over 40 books, including Christian biographies and devotional commentaries on the Bible.

Book excerpt: In this historical accounting of the great patriarch, Meyer concentrates on the development of Abraham’s faith through the difficult times and successes and victories of his life. Abraham’s trust in God was strong when he left his father’s homeland; He learned even more fully to rely on God rather than himself, which is why he became the father of faith. Meyer delivers to his readers Abraham’s life with detailed attention to archaeological discoveries and cultural customs. However, he is also very focused on the spiritual principles for readers. The outcome is a complex portrait of one of the most significant characters in the Bible, a devotional biography for those who are “by faith, children of Abraham.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham was the same as we are today. He never dreamed of being called by God. Suddenly, while he and his relatives were in Chaldea worshipping other gods, the God of glory appeared to him. This appearing was a great attraction, enabling him to come out of his fallen background and accept God's calling. Although Abraham answered God's call, he did not do so immediately nor absolutely. Although he learned to live by faith, he had serious failures along the way. He followed God in a way not unlike us all. Eventually, he was brought to know grace for the fulfillment of God's purpose. In a remarkable commentary on the life of Abraham from the book of Genesis, Witness Lee presents Abraham as a genuine man, not unlike us all, fallen, but called by God. Like him, we have seen "the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" and have been attracted to follow Him. Like him, we must learn the lessons of faith through trials, testing, and failure, in order to enter into the promises and blessings of God. Abraham--Called by God, taken from the Life-study of Genesis, presents a unique and vital view of the father of our faith.

Book excerpt: In Abraham or The Obedience of Faith, F.B. Meyer tells the story of Abraham, who lived a life of faithfulness to God. Abraham's life is a witness to the fact that faith can grow in our lives. "But wherever faith is, it is the link with Omnipotence; the channel for God's communications; the wire along which the Fire of Heaven may travel. And as it is used according to the promptings of the Divine Spirit, and in obedience to His commands, it will grow. It grew in Abraham. It will grow in us." Frederick Brotherton Meyer was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England, a contemporary and friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon. Meyer was involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic, authored 40 religious books, numerous articles and was described as The Archbishop of the Free Churches.

Book excerpt: "I encourage anyone who wants to have a better grounding in the biblical, historical, and theological basis for believing in the continuation of the gifts-especially gift of healing-to make this a part of his or her library. This book is not milk; it is meat." —Randy Clark Jesus brought people into direct contact with the power and authority of God. Every healing and miracle revealed the glory of God and the reality of His kingdom. Jesus gave the disciples authority to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom, to heal the sick, and to deliver the oppressed. Receive Your Miracle Now presents a strong argument for the legitimacy of a Christian healing ministry in today's church. By studying key passages of Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments, examining the thread of healing throughout church history, and presenting a theological basis for healing and deliverance ministry, Bob Sawvelle demonstrates that through the healing gifts Jesus is still glorified, the sick are still healed, the oppressed are still freed, and God's kingdom advances in the earth, as it ever has.

Book excerpt: Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.
