Book excerpt: Laying Down Lincoln is the story of Harry Cattell as he struggles with the task of embalming Abraham Lincoln and the many trials he faced during the Civil War. The series begins in 1861 when a less cynical Cattell quits medical school to volunteer for the Union Army to perform his patriotic duty, his trials of life as a soldier, and witnessing some of the reasons why Americans felt compelled to serve in the Civil War. As the series continues events prompt Cattell to join his Southern stepfather’s undertaking firm, and as the war unfolds, Cattell embalms young Willie Lincoln, operates out of the Confederate capital at Richmond, develops a rivalry with Dr. Thomas Holmes--the father of modern embalming--and he is dealt a devastating blow at the battle of Gettysburg. Then in the spring of 1865, he travels on the Lincoln Funeral Train and witnesses city after city strive to outdo the previous in its display of grief for the slain President. As Cattell journeys through the Civil War and ultimately toward Springfield, Illinois with the body of Abraham Lincoln, will opposing sympathies tear apart not only the country but also his family? Will he lose himself in a cutthroat profession that profits from the slaughter? Is it possible to honorably lay Lincoln to rest amidst the fractured national milieu? It is all to discover in the Laying Lincoln Down series. A Caliber Comics release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully illustrated graphic adaptation that offers a new look at the Gettysburg Address, the bloody battle that prompted it, and the Civil War Most of us can recall "Four score and seven years ago," but much of what we know about this historic speech, and what it has to say about the Civil War itself, has been lost since we left grade school. The Gettysburg Address offers a revolutionary way to experience Lincoln's masterwork. Striking at the underlying meaning of Lincoln's words, it uses the Address to tell the whole story of the Civil War. We see how bitter seeds sown by the Founding Fathers sprouted into a bloody war, and ultimately blossomed into the progress and justice of the Civil Rights era. The book depicts pivotal events that led to the upheaval of the secession crisis, the crucial Battle of Gettysburg, and the conflict's still-unfolding legacy with firsthand accounts from Americans from all walks of life: slaves, soldiers, citizens, and, of course, Abraham Lincoln himself—the most transformational president in U.S. history. Writer Jonathan Hennessey and illustrator Aaron McConnell illuminate history with vibrant, detailed graphics and captions that will give you a fresh understanding of this vital speech, which defined America's most tragic war and marked a new path forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866) is the first book of poetry published by the American author Herman Melville. The volume is dedicated "To the Memory of the Three Hundred Thousand Who in the War For the Maintenance of the Union Fell Devotedly Under the Flag of Their Fathers" and its 72 poems deal with the battles and personalities of the American Civil War and their aftermath. Also included are Notes and a Supplement in prose in which Melville sets forth his thoughts on how the Post-war Reconstruction should be carried out. Critics at the time were at best respectful and often sharply critical of Melville's unorthodox style. The book had sold only 486 copies by 1868 and recovered barely half of its publications costs.
