Book excerpt: Everybody loves Katie; with her bubbly personality, her beauty, her never-ending supply of care and support for her patients and friends, and her huge sense of fun, there's very little to dislike. Yes, she's a bit scatty, she tends not to sweat the small stuff (like an engine light on her dashboard - that is until her Mini won't actually start any more), and she can talk the hind legs off a donkey, but none of that stops most people from thinking she's pretty damn adorable. Well, most people, other than Sam, that is. Sam is anything but bubbly. His surly demeanour is the complete opposite of Katie's, and over the six years that she's known him one thing has become very clear: Sam cannot stand her. The fact that he makes her nervous doesn't help the situation. Around Sam her verbal diarrhoea seems ten times worse, the snort that she tries to hold in when she laughs refuses to be suppressed, and her clumsiness assumes clown-like proportions. If only he weren't quite so intimidating, she might be able to act like a normal human being, but his sheer masculine beauty is enough to throw her off before she's even spoken to him. Then there's the fact that he looks at her like she's something he's scraped off his shoe. The combination is enough to short-circuit her brain. Katie may be bubbly and bright but unfortunately her past is not, and it's started leaking into her present. She hides her fear from her friends as they have problems of their own, but when Sam finds out the potential danger she's in, for some reason he is furious. Then again, there's a reason Sam is the way he is. He has his own demons to contend with. Shutting himself off and burying his pain has been working well for him over the last six years since leaving the Special Forces, so the last thing he wants is to spend any time with the one woman that cuts through the numbness he surrounds himself with and actually makes him feel again. But he simply can't stand by if Katie is in danger; he can't allow her to be hurt. Unfortunately there are other ways to be hurt, and by getting closer to Katie, Sam may inflict more damage than her past ever could. Because Sam is damaged, and some things are beyond repair. This is a full-length contemporary romance / romantic comedy with its own HEA and no cliffhanger.Praise for Beyond Repair "Fast paced and the author did a great job with the characters. Recommend to everyone who loves a romance between a tortured soul and bubbly, rainbow living angel." Star Angel's Reviews "I really enjoyed this read and cannot wait for the next book Susie Tate comes out with. This is a great series to read if you like the medical background of a show like Grey's Anatomy with the light humor of your favorite romantic comedy." Wicked Little Pixie Reviews "A must read series that begs to be on everyone's e-readers and shelves. Love, understanding, patience and passion - Perfection." The Book Fairy Reviews"This series has suspense, great banter, friendship, love and drama: what more could a reader want?" Words Turn Me On Book Blog "This story had me hooked from the beginning to the end and I've only just managed to put it down." "Really enjoyed the ending especially the epilogue." Mizz Clare Book Blog. Warning - This story contains some swearing and violence. Author Background Susie Tate is a general practitioner now, but she has also spent years working in hospital medicine. This the first of her books to be set in general practice and she hopes that it will give readers a feel for what it's like behind the scenes, as well as being a funny, at times heartbreaking story.

Book excerpt: A Southern poet and author shares a “beautifully written and timely” memoir that “weaves together personal and national traumas” (David Graham, The Atlantic). In 2011, Sebastian Matthews and his family were in a major car accident. It took them years to recover from their injuries and the aftereffects of trauma. When Sebastian finally returned to the world, he found society in its own a traumatized state—one brought on by police shootings of unarmed African Americans and the continuing occurrence of mass shootings. Sebastian saw the signs of PTSD in the people around him, and found his own daily interactions becoming more dysfunctional. Living in a progressive town inside a conservative county in the Mountain South only made things more volatile. So he decided to pursue an experiment in re-engagement. Sebastian sought out encounters with people in full awareness of the potential divides and misunderstandings between them. Starting with his own neighborhood, he moved out into the counties around him, then traveled further out into the country. In Beyond Repair, Sebastian recounts his journey through a series of recoveries—physical, personal, and communal.

Twelve-year-old Daisy and Ruby are totally inseparable. They’ve grown up together, and Daisy has always counted on having Ruby there to pave the way, encourage her to try new things, and to see the magic in the world. Then Ruby is killed in a tragic accident while on vacation, and Daisy’s life is shattered. Now Daisy finds herself having to face the big things in her life—like starting middle school and becoming a big sister—without her best friend. It’s hard when you feel sad all the time. But thanks to new friends, new insights, and supportive family members, Daisy is able to see what life after Ruby can look like. And as she reaches beyond that to help repair the world around her, she is reminded that friendship is eternal, and that magic can be found in the presence of anyone who chooses to embrace it.

Book excerpt: From the author's Introduction: Let me start by saying what this book is not. It is not an attack on the men and women of the Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency, the overwhelming majority of whom are dedicated, patriotic Americans working hard everyday on behalf of their fellow citizens. God knows that they do not do it for the money nor do they do it for the recognition. They do it because they believe in the work, and because they know, as I do, that there really are monsters in the world, and someone has to protect us from them. It is also not an argument against the existence of a central human intelligence collection organization within the United States Government. We desperately needed a central intelligence agency in 1947 when the CIA was created. We even more desperately need such an entity today. The threats facing us are multiplying and becoming more complex. The time horizons in which threats are emerging are shortening. Technology is evolving at an astonishing rate, and we really are fast approaching the day when there will be dozens of groups and nations on this planet capable of threatening us with biological, chemical, radiological and nuclear weapons. This is not pulp fiction. This is reality. This book is an argument that the existing Central Intelligence Agency is no longer capable of performing the task for which it was designed and must, rapidly, be replaced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " How a more positive form of identity politics can restore public trust in government Illiberalism, Thomas Main writes, is the basic repudiation of liberal democracy, the very foundation on which the United States rests. It says no to electoral democracy, human rights, the rule of law, toleration. It is a political ideology that finds expression in such older right-wing extremist groups as the Ku Klux Klan and white supremacists and more recently among the Alt-Right and the Dark Enlightenment. There are also left-of-center illiberal movements, including various forms of communism, anarchism, and some antifascist movements. The Rise of Illiberalism explores the philosophical underpinnings of this toxic political ideology and documents how it has infiltrated the mainstream of political discourse in the United States. By the early twenty-first century, Main writes, liberal democracy’s failure to deal adequately with social problems created a space illiberal movements could exploit to promote their particular brands of identity politics as an alternative. A critical need thus is for what the author calls “positive identity politics,” or a widely shared sense of community that gives a feeling of equal importance to all sectors of society. Achieving this goal will, however, be an enormous challenge. In seeking actionable remedies for the broken political system of the United States, this book makes a major scholarly contribution to current debates about the future of liberal democracy. "
