Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Elementary Dynamics In the following work I have attempted to write a fairly complete text-book on those parts of Dynamics which can be treated without the use of the Infinitesimal Calculus. The hook is intended for the use of beginners, but it is probable that most students would find it advisable, at any rate on the first reading of the subject, to confine their attention to the examples given in the text, reserving most of the questions at the ends of the chapters for a second reading. Most students would also find it advisable to omit Chap. III., the last four articles of Chap. IV., and Chap. IX., until the rest of the book has been fairly mastered. I have ventured to alter slightly the time-honoured enunciation of Newton's Second Law of Motion. I have used the property of the hodograph in the chapter on normal acceleration and in dealing with the motion of a particle in a conic section with an acceleration directed towards the focus. It is intended as a text-book for those who, having already mastered the elements of the Calculus and acquired some familiarity with the methods of Particle Dynamics, wish to become acquainted with the principles underlying the equations of motion of a solid body. Although indebted to the exhaustive works of Routh and Price for many suggestions and problems, I believe that the arrangement of the work, method of treatment, and more particularly the illustrations, are entirely new and original; and that they will not only aid beginners in appreciating fundamental truths, but will also point out to them the road along which they must travel in order to become intimate with those higher complex motions of a material system which have their culminating point in the region of Physical Astronomy. I assume that the Student has previously read some such course as is included in my Elementary Dynamics. I also assume that he possesses a fair working knowledge of Differential and Integral Calculus; the Differential Equations, with which he will meet, are solved in the d104, and in an Appendix he will find a summary of the methods of solution of such equations. In Rigid Dynamics I have chiefly confined myself to two-dimensional motion, and I have omitted all reference to moving axes. I have included in the book a large number of Examples, mostly collected from University and College Examination Papers; I have verified every question, and hope that there will not be found a large number of serious errors.
