Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many emotions that need to be expressed for true healing to begin. Starting is the hard part. Inside this journal, I began the sentences for you. Completing them is your first step to healing. These particular sentences were created to help you to tap into those emotions you are afraid to share with others for fear of rejection. The pain of guilt, shame, fear, anger, anxiety, and other emotions you've been afraid to confront, are not yours to hold onto. We are a visual people. You have to see your pain to heal from it. As the former wife of John Allen Muhammad, the convicted and now executed, DC Sniper, I've felt no one could handle my emotions. I knew I had to get them outside of myself to heal. I began journaling and found more emotions I didn't realize existed. I couldn't tell anyone because I felt ashamed, guilty, and thought no one would believe me anyway. Writing them down gave me the opportunity to truly focus on my pain and how these emotions were affecting my everyday living. As I continued to write, without worrying about punctuation or how I would be accepted for what I was saying, my heart was no longer heavy. The more sentences I completed, the better I felt on a daily basis. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing! I'm so thankful to God for giving me the inspiration and guidance to share this journaling process with you. I hope and pray you will use it as a tool to help in your healing process. We all need to confront our emotional injuries we suffer on a daily basis. It is a long journey, however, it is worth the trip. A comprehensive safety plan, to escape your abusive relationship along with resources for victims/survivors are included.

Book excerpt: INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLER • A gripping tour de force in which three estranged brothers return to the Swedish lakeside cottage where, more than two decades before, an unspeakable accident forever altered their family and changed the course of their lives. "Takes you deep into an emotional labyrinth [where] you'll cry for these brothers. For the men they became, for the boys they were, for the innocence they lost. Brilliant, haunting and unforgettable." —Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove There is Nils, the oldest, who couldn't escape his suffocating home soon enough, and Pierre, the youngest, easily bullied and quick to lash out. And then there is Benjamin, always the family's nerve center, perpetually on the lookout for triggers and trap doors in a volatile home where the children were left to fend for themselves, competing for their father's favor and their mother's elusive love. But as the years have unfolded, Benjamin has grown increasingly untethered from reality, frozen in place while life carries on around him. And among the brothers a dangerous current now vibrates. What really happened that summer day when everything was blown to pieces? In a thrillingly fast-paced narrative, The Survivors mixes the emotional acuity of Edward St. Aubyn, the literary verve of Ian McEwan, and the heart of Shuggie Bain. By brilliantly dissecting a mind unravelling in the wake of tragedy, Alex Schulman reveals the ways in which our deepest loyalties leave us open to the greatest betrayals.

The book is structured around critical R tasks, and focuses on applied knowledge, rather than abstract concepts. Gaubatz’s easy-to-read approach helps students with little or no background in statistics or programming to develop real-world R skills through straightforward coverage of R objects and functions. Focusing on real-world data, the challenges of dataset construction, and the use of R’s powerful graphing tools, the guide is written in an accessible, sympathetic, even humorous style that ensures students acquire functional R skills they can use in their own projects and carry into their work beyond the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of folklore in the discussion of catastrophe and trauma? How do disaster survivors use language, ritual, and the material world to articulate their experiences? What insights and tools can the field of folkloristics offer survivors for navigating and narrating disaster and its aftermath? Can folklorists contribute to broader understandings of empathy and the roles of listening in ethnographic work? We Are All Survivors is a collection of essays exploring the role of folklore in the wake of disaster. Contributors include scholars from the United States and Japan who have long worked with disaster-stricken communities or are disaster survivors themselves; individual chapters address Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Maria, and two earthquakes in Japan, including the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster of 2011. Adapted from a 2017 special issue of Fabula (from the International Society for Folk Narrative Research), the book includes a revised introduction, an additional chapter with original illustrations, and a new conclusion considering how folklorists are documenting the COVID-19 pandemic. We Are All Survivors bears witness to survivors' expressions of remembrance, grieving, and healing.

Book excerpt: In a moment of clarity after yet another angry explosion by her husband one Thanksgiving Day, Rose promised her son that she would find a way out of their unhealthy family situation. With the support of her domestic abuse class instructor and the helpful reminders in her little red notebook, Rose made the courageous decision to step out in faith and trust God one step at a time as she walked away from her abusive marriage of eleven years. Jeanne Jensen understands the hurt and uncertainty of a home situation that doesn't feel safe. Jeanne is Rose, and she knows exactly what it feels like to walk the emotionally painful, often lonely road from abuse to freedom in her own life. Like many women, she struggled with what she should do and when-always trusting that God was right beside her, guiding her through each difficult step. When Jeanne started writing in a teal leather-bound journal, simply documenting each day of her one-year commitment to tell her story, she never imagined it would turn into a miraculous manifesto of God's goodness and favor as she courageously stepped out in faith. The Survivor's Journal will encourage any woman feeling trapped in an abusive relationship to listen to their heart, learn from those who've gone before them, and have the courage to leave an unsafe marriage. Whether you are in an abusive relationship yourself, or want to help someone else who is suffering from domestic abuse, this book offers practical guidance, inspiration to trust in our faithful God, and hope that a new life of freedom is possible . . . one step of faith at a time.
