Book excerpt: As a peritus at Vatican II and by the end of his life arguably the world's leading Mariologist, René Laurentin has earned the privilege of republication of a work of considerable value for any theologian who aims for comprehensiveness of Catholic theological perspective, historically and systematically. Laurentin's orthodox, yet highly original treatment displays his command of all of the relevant biblical, patristic, medieval and modern texts up to and including the entire proceedings of the Second Vatican Council, as well as the whole range of related historical and theological scholarship. His proposal to pursue Mariological speculation along two tracks - first, "from above," following the course of doctrinal development from biblical revelation to the VCII era, and second, "from below," considering Mary's own life (walking in her footsteps, as it were), from before the Annunciation to the Parousia - provides a clear, accessible structure for the work, yielding rich theological and spiritual fruit. Not only are all the major Marian doctrines and their developments handled with the greatest sensitivity, from the Virgin birth to the modern promulgations of Immaculate Conception and Assumption, but Laurentin's approach in his second part opens the way to a human-psychological treatment of motherhood, still solidly bolstered by traditional Christian anthropology. Regarding Mary's status as Mother of God, Laurentin's discussion of the Theotokos exhibits his deep ecumenical commitments, as much as his specific attention to Mary's soteriological role as a sticking point for Protestantism. One of the most striking qualities of the work is Laurentin's deft integration of his evident scholastic formation into an overarching vision thoroughly at ease with the phenomenological ("personalist") and existential currents in which he also inevitably swam throughout his education and professional scholarly occupation. As a result, the work can be read and appreciated instinctively, as it were, as much by the eclectic contemporary theologian, influenced by the likes of Heidegger, et al, as by the Thomist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Treatise on the Rosary: Together With Six Reasons for Being Devout to the Blessed Virgin; Also True Devotion to Her In obedience to the decrees of the Pontiff, Urban the Eighth, of blessed memory, I protest that I do not intend to attribute any other than purely human authority to all the miracles, graces, incidents, and revelations contained in this little book; neither to the titles Holy or Blessed applied to the Servants of God yet uncanonized; excepting in cases where these have been confirmed by the Holy Roman Catholic Church, and by the Apostolic See, of which I profess myself an obedient son. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition Saint Francis de Sales devout method of hearing Mass has been added. Also a commentary on the Memorare and the Stations of the Cross. This work is divided into three parts. The FIRST PART embraces a short treatise on the Rosary. A great portion of tbis treatise is extracted from two small Dominican works, written in French, on the Rosary. The division of this little treatise is somewhat similar to Cardinal Lambruschini's treatise on the Immaculate Conception. The SECOND PART treats of Six Reasons for being devout to the Holy Mother of God. The THIRD PART treats of True Devotion to the Divine Mother. It is styled True Devotion to the B. Virgin, in order to distinguish true from false Devotion to her. We cannot be truly devout to her unless we desire to amend our lives, faithfully honor, and commend ourselves to her. But True Devotion to Mary will be more fully explained when we come to the THIRD PART. In this discourse there will be found quotations from some of the most learned and saintly men of almost every age of the Christian era, regarding the Immaculate Mother of God.

In this very treatise on the veritable devotion to our Blessed Lady, he has recorded this prophecy. "I clearly foresee that raging brutes will come in fury to tear with their diabolical teeth this little writing, and him whom the Holy Ghost has made use of to write it; or at least to envelop it in the silence of a coffer, in order that it may not appear." Nevertheless, he prophesies both its appearance and its success. All this was fulfilled to the letter. The author died in 1716, and the treatise was found by accident by one of the priests of his congregation at St. Laurent-sur-Sevre, in 1842. The existing superior was able to attest the handwriting as being that of the venerable founder; and the autograph was sent to Rome, to be examined in the process of canonisation. All those who are likely to read this book love God, and lament that they do not love Him more; all desire something for His glory-the spread of some good work, the success of some devotion, the coming of some good time. One man has been striving for years to overcome a particular fault, and has not succeeded. Another mourns, and almost wonders while he mourns, that so few of his relations and friends have been converted to the faith. One grieves that he has not devotion enough; another that he has a cross to carry, which is a peculiarly impossible cross to him; while a third has domestic troubles and family unhappinesses, which feel almost incompatible with his salvation; and for all these things prayer appears to bring so little remedy. But what is the remedy that is wanted? What is the remedy indicated by God Himself? If we may rely on the disclosures of the Saints, it is an immense increase of devotion to our Blessed Lady; but, remember, nothing short of an immense one.
