Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States The aim of this little book is to tell in a simple and con cise form the story of the founding and development of the United States. The study of the history of one's own country is a serious matter, and should be entered upon by the text-book writer, by the teacher, and by the pupil in a serious spirit, even to a greater extent than the study of language or of arithmetic. No effort has been made, therefore, to make out of this text-book a story book. It is' a'-text-book pure and simple, and should be used as a text-book; to be studied' diligently by the pupil and expounded carefully by the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States, 1492-1920 IN this book I have sought to tell clearly and impartially the story of human achievement in what is now the United States, from the earliest traces of man's existence to the presentvtime. Out of the multitude of facts which may be considered within the domain of American history, those have been recounted which seem best suited to explain the progress of the people as a nation. The influence of physical environment has been discussed in the opening chapter, which also deals with the primitive inhabitants. An attempt has been made to give the colonial period its proper unity and show in what manner the colonies were a part of the general British scheme of im perial government. At the same time one must remember that it is American and not British history which concerns us, and for that reason the narrative must not neglect the individual colonies. From the end of the colonial period the dominant interest is the progress of events which have to do with the common cause of independence, and after that with national development. Much thought has been given to the proper distribution of em phasis between the various historical factors. Political institutions are the most conscious expression of the national will. They determine the form of the story which the historian has to tell. But social and economic conditions and the actions of leading men give color and contour to the figure and decide whether it be attractive or unattractive, vivid or unimpressive. This volume contains at inter vals summaries of the habits and social progress of the people, while throughout it seeks to present the decisions of congress and adminis trations in the matters which relate to the most important phases of popular welfare. It is believed that, if well done, it thus becomes in the most vital sense a social history. My aim has been to lay the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue further the subject of American history in whatever phase they may be interested. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States This volume aims to present the story of American history in a form which will engage the interest of pupils in the upper grades of the elementary schools. It will be found that a considerable amount of material of traditional interest, but of small intrinsic importance, has been omitted in order that a fuller emphasis might be placed on events and move ments of greater significance. Following the best teaching opinion, the volume deals constantly with the causal rela tions of historical events, due regard being had for the capacity of the pupils who will use the book. The wealth of illustrations and the many excellent maps with which the publishers have enriched the volume greatly enhance its value for school use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American People Miss turpin's Short History of the American People has impressed me as a work of exceptional value. The narrative is clear, impartial, spirited, and altogether read able. The prime merit of the work is, in my opinion, that events are made so to unfold that even a child will grasp the principle of cause and effect as it has worked itself out in the history of our country. This volume is not a series of detached dates and incidents, however picturesque or pleasingly told. The process of growth is brought out in every paragraph in such a way as to make the sequence of events illumining. By such treatment the reader is eu abled to contract the historical habit. As the habit of sound thinking is more than a thousand thoughts, so the historical habit of interpreting cause and effect in human experience is of far more value than any knowledge of events, however comprehensive. The author has preserved the due perspective of Ameri can history by giving a large place to the facts bearing on the industrial and social development of our people, in accordance with the changing sphere of the modern State, which is becoming more and more social both in its spirit and aims. The style is simple and yet energetic, while the appara tus for teaching, such as maps, topics for study, references for reading, and suggestive questions, are admirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States The object aimed at in the preparation of this book was to produce a systematic, brief, clear, and authentic history of the United States for the use of schools. The plan is simple. N o arbitrary division into historical periods and eras is employed, but each chapter embraces associated events and forms a natural link in an unbroken chain. A strictly chronological order of arrangement is followed, whereby occurrences are shown in their true relation to one another, and to their causes. The most important dates are made prominent in the text by a peculiar type. A condensed record of general progress is placed at the end of almost every chapter, designed to interest the pupil in the civil and domestic character of the country, and in employments, institutions, and ideas not directly connected with wars, politics, or national legislation.
