Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Port of Bristol Here are many books about Bristol; the one in the hands of the T reader deals with the history of the Port in a form suitable for general reading and for reference: as far as I am aware, it is the first to treat the subject in a popular and comprehensive manner. The clocks are under municipal control, and their history and manage ment are matters of importance to all citizens. Bristol was once the second port in the kingdom; it long ago lost that position, through a variety of causes, some of which ought not to have operated. We lost our supremacy in the Atlantic steamship traffic through mistakes that should have been avoided. But in the latter half of the nineteenth century the old spirit of enterprise began to reassert itself. Many things were done to bring the port up to modern requirements. No doubt municipal control, with its multitude of counsellors, often hindered progress. How it did this, and how the forward policy ulti mately triumphed, is recorded in the following pages. Book excerpt: The Port of Bristol looks at a slice of the Port's long history and industrial heritage (1908 - 1977), a period in which it was thriving and growing dramatically. During the 1870s a number of granaries and mills were constructed in the City Docks, and more throughout the twentieth century at Avonmouth which, a decade later, became a major miling centre, with a million tons of grain arriving each year. Oil importing became the Port's biggest trade during the 1940s, while by the end of the 1960s there were major plants in the area producing zinc, carbon black, bricks and fertiliser. In the same decade Avonmouth was important as quarter of the UK's tea, as well as raw materials for two of Bristol's other traditional industries; cocoa and tobacco. The period covered by this book begins with the opening of the Royal Edward Dock at Avonmouth in 1908 and ends with the opening of the Royal Portbury Dock in 1977, which has since become the modern centre of the Port of Bristol, dealing with bulk cargoes, forest products and more cars than any other port in Europe. Illustrated with over 200 photographs from the Port of Bristol Authority Collection held at the Bristol Museums Service - many of which have not been seen in print before - Port of Bristol presents the reader not only with a unique insight into the everyday life of the Docks and the people who worked there, but also with a flavour of the life of the Port during a golden age.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Find out all manner of things, from why a 'Bristol Diamond' would never be found in a jewellery shop to why local by-laws restrict carpet beating to certain hours. Along with a fresh look at city life past and present, these and many more anecdotes will surprise even those Bristolians who thought they really knew their city.
