Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Public School Reciter IT is a well-known fact that the modern Public School Curriculum makes short work of any subject that does not directly or indirectly tend towards examinations. Under these circumstances, the teaching of English Literature in the Upper School usually resolves itself into the getting up of Set Books or the supplementing of the Literature Primer with choicely culled notes. But in the Lower School - the II., III., and even occasionally Lower IV. Forms - there is yet h0pe. For there are still two ways left unguarded by which a taste for Literature may be cunningly insinuated by the wary teacher; one is the Recitation lesson, the other, the Composition lesson. We are now considering the question of Recitation. The chief advantage of Recitation as a class subject is, that it is so eminently suited for the purpose. In a class of fifty boys or girls you can arouse a sense of enthusiasm, of public spirit, Of passion held in a leash, that you cannot arouse in a class of five. And as Literature has been defined, by one who understood it, as the expression of the highest thought in the most perfect form, it is evident that the first training in it must be on the emotional, rather than on the intellectual side. It is here that Recitation comes in; for in trying to express aloud the best thoughts of others in the best way, we enter almost unconsciously into their spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialized Recitation While the socialized recitation is no solution for all the problems of teaching, much less a cure-all for the evils of society in general, it offers such great possibilities for the development of the individual pupil and the realization of the social purpose of the school that it deserves the attention of all progressive teachers. It is the purpose of this little volume to show the place which the socialized recitation may have in the modern school, to emphasize its possibilities in the mastery of subject matter as well as in the cultivation of social ideals and practices on the part of the children in our schools, to present enough concrete material to make the technique clear to the teacher who wishes to use the method, to give a vivid view of the dangers to be avoided, and to show in some detail the qualities which need to be cultivated. The thanks of the author are due especially to Dr. Ernest Horn for helpful suggestions after reading the manuscript and for supplying the stenographic report of one of the lessons presented in Chapter IV; and to Miss Bessie L. Pierce of the University (of Iowa) High School for similar service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method of the Recitation The Method of the Recitation has sprung out of school-room work, and is designed to be a practical application of the principles of method to the various problems of class-room instruction. It is an effort to bring together and to organize the various principles that control skillful teaching. It is based fundamentally upon the inductive-deductive thought movement in acquiring and using knowledge. This organized plan of laying out recitation work was first projected by the thinkers of the Herbart school in Germany. For more than thirty years they have been developing and applying it under the title "The Formal Steps of Instruction" (Die formalen Stufen des Unterrichts), Formerly Dr. T. Ziller at Leipzig was a leader in the movement, and more recently Dr. W. Rein at Jena. They worked out their theory and applied it with proficiency to a large variety of topics in different studies, thus showing the flexibility of leading principles under various forms of application. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of High School English: June, 1914 Makers of high school courses of study and high school teachers have not been unmindful of these considerations. More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike.
