Book excerpt: A New Dawn for Global Value Chain Participation in the Philippines provides policy recommendations to increase the Philippines’ global value chain (GVC) participation in a post†“COVID-19 (coronavirus) world. The Philippines could indeed benefit from the shifting dynamics of GVCs by attracting more investments as investors look for alternative production sources less sensitive to trade tensions. The book uses up-to-date trade data, analysis of megatrends affecting selected value chains, and interviews with multinational companies and their local suppliers to inform a strategic approach to rethink, diversify, and reorient the country’s GVC participation. The main finding is that the crisis can help strengthen the country’s foreign direct investment attractiveness and motivate operators in GVCs to develop the domestic skills they need for more advantageous GVC participation. The book also explores policies to mobilize key stakeholders (government, lead firms, and domestic suppliers) and to foster participation in three strategic GVC clusters: industrial, manufacturing, and transportation; technology, media, and telecommunications; and health and life sciences.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the changing gender patterns of work in a global retail environment associated with the rise of contemporary retail and global sourcing. This has affected the working lives of hundreds of millions of workers in high-, middle- and low-income countries. The growth of contemporary retail has been driven by the commercialised production of many goods previously produced unpaid by women within the home. Sourcing is now largely undertaken through global value chains in low- or middle-income economies, using a 'cheap' feminised labour force to produce low-price goods. As women have been drawn into the labour force, households are increasingly dependent on the purchase of food and consumer goods, blurring the boundaries between paid and unpaid work. This book examines how gendered patterns of work have changed and explores the extent to which global retail opens up new channels to leverage more gender-equitable gains in sourcing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 25 years developing countries will move to center stage in the global economy. Global Economic Prospects 2007 analyzes the opportunities - and stresses - this will create. While rich and poor countries alike stand to benefit, the integration process will make more acute stresses already apparent today - in income inequality, in labor markets, and in the environment. Over the next 25 years, rapid technological progress, burgeoning trade in goods and services, and integration of financial markets create the opportunity for faster long-term growth. However, some regions, notably Africa, are at risk of being left behind. The coming globalization will also see intensified stresses on the "global commons." Addressing global warming, preserving marine fisheries, and containing infectious diseases will require effective multilateral collaboration to ensure that economic growth and poverty reduction proceed without causing irreparable harm to future generations."

Book excerpt: With the Leyte Campaign the War in the Pacific entered a decisive stage. The period of limited offensives, bypassing, and island hopping was virtually over. American troops in greater numbers than ever before assembled in the Pacific Theater, supported by naval and air forces of corresponding size, fought and overcame Japanese forces of greater magnitude than any previously met. Though the spotlight is on the front-line fighting, the reader will find in this volume a faithful description of all arms and services performing their missions. The account is not exclusively an infantry story. It covers as well the support of ground fighting on Leyte by large-scale naval operations and by land-based air power under the most adverse conditions. In addition, careful attention to logistical matters, such as the movement of supplies and the evacuation of the wounded, gives the reader a picture of the less spectacular activities of an army in battle.
