Book excerpt: Shear stress, eddy viscosity, and mixing length distributions corresponding to five two-dimensional, incompressible equilibrium turbulent boundary layers were calculated by substituting measured velocity profile data into the governing equations. The five flows cover the range from moderate adverse pressure gradient to strong favorable pressure gradient. (Modified author abstract).

The book explains for example how to tackle turbulence in industrial applications. It is useful to several disciplines, such as, mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace engineers and also to professors, researchers, beginners, under graduates and post graduates. The following issues are emphasized in the book: - Modeling and computations of engineering flows: The author discusses in detail the quantities of interest for engineering turbulent flows and how to select an appropriate turbulence model; Also, a treatment of the selection of appropriate boundary conditions for the CFD simulations is given. - Modeling of turbulent convective heat transfer: This is encountered in several practical situations. It basically needs discussion on issues of treatment of walls and turbulent heat fluxes. - Modeling of buoyancy driven flows, for example, smoke issuing from chimney, pollutant discharge into water bodies, etc

Book excerpt: In 1976 a similar titled IUTAM Symposium (Structure of Turbulence and Drag Reduction) was held in Washington . However, the progress made during the last thirteen years as weil as the much promising current research desired a second one this year. In Washington drag reduction by additives and by direct manipulation of the walls (compliant walls and heated surfaces) were discussed. In the meantime it became evident that drag reduction also occurs when turbulence is influenced by geometrical means, e.g. by influencing the pressure distribution by the shape of the body (airfoils) or by the introduction of streamwise perturbances on a body (riblets). In the recent years turbulence research has seen increasing attention being focused on the investigation of coherent structures, mainly in Newtonian fluids. We all know that these structures are a significant feature of turbulent flows, playing an important role in the energy balance in such flows. However their place in turbulence theories as weil as the factors influencing their development are still poorly understood. Consequently, the investigation of phenomena in which the properties of coherent structures are alte red provides a promising means of improving our understanding of turbulent flows in general.

Book excerpt: This book covers fluid dynamics and fluvial processes, including basics applicable to open channel flow followed by turbulence characteristics related to sediment-laden flows. It presents well-balanced exposure of physical concepts, mathematical treatments, validation of the models/theories, and experimentations using modern electronic gadgets within the scope. In addition, it explores fluid motions, sediment-fluid interactions, erosion and scouring, sediment suspension and bed load transportation, image processing for particle dynamics, and various problems of applied fluid mechanics in natural sciences. Features: Gives comprehensive treatment on fluid dynamics and fluvial process from fundamentals to advanced level applications in one volume. Presents knowledge on sediment transport and its interaction with turbulence. Covers recent methodologies in the study of turbulent flow theories with verification of laboratory data collected by ADV, PIV, URS, LDA, and imaging techniques, and field data collected by MMB and S4 current meters. Explores the latest empirical formulae for the estimations of bed load, saltation, suspension, and bedform migration. Contains theory to experimentations with field practices with comprehensive explanations and illustrations. This book is aimed at senior undergraduates, engineering and applied science postgraduate and research students working in mechanical, civil, geo-sciences, and chemical engineering departments pertaining to fluid mechanics, hydraulics, sediment transportation, and turbulent flows.
