Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of the English People, Vol. 1 Four Tudors had disappeared; Queen Elizabeth had been many years on the throne, and no signs could yet be discerned of the extraordinary development that dramatic art was to attain in England. During the main part of the sixteenth century, that country still had, so to speak, anybody's dramatic literature. The differences were unimportant; they have been noticed only because they became later so conspicuous. Until the last quarter of the century, nothing appeared in the island which could not be seen elsewhere too, and no particular merit was observable. Mysteries preserved their popularity; in spite of all the efforts to suppress them, they were performed up to the end of the Tudor period. The Creation, Epiphany, and Passion, the manger at Bethlehem, and the cross on Golgotha continued to edify the multitude; the rant of tetrarchs, sultans, and pagan emperors, the tricks and black deeds of devils, continued to amuse or terrify. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Richard Green was an English historian. He was the author of seven books although History of the English People was arguably one of his finest. Although Green began his career as a clergyman, he was always an enthusiastic student of history. Ultimately he decided to change his chosen profession, quit the clergy and became the librarian at Lembeth. Writing history was always part of his plan and he began straightaway to bringing those plans to fruition. When he undertook the project that resulted in this book, he began with the thought in mind that there were not enough published and reputable materials about the history of England. "For the conquest of Britain by the English our authorities are scant and imperfect." Therefore, he took it upon himself to complete a comprehensive and well sourced document about English history. While completed later in his life, this book (along with his last of his books), were written during a period of ill health. Due to this, his wife, Alice Stopford, helped complete his writing when he was too ill to continue. That means that some of this book is written by her hand as well which makes it an interesting exploration of England and perhaps the first one written by both a man and a woman (although she is not given author credit). Only the reader can determine if Green was truly successful in his quest to achieve a complete work (with verifiable and strong sources) about the life and history of the English People. His work stands the test of time as a monument to the life and dedication of one man, relentless in his quest to pursue his dreams and ultimately make the world a better place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English People, Vol. 1 The story of how the Short History of the English People came to be written would be the story of Mr. Green's life, from the time when his boyish interest was first awakened by the world beyond himself until his work was done. So closely are the work and the worker bound together that nu less the biography be fully written no real account of the growth of the book can indeed be given. But in issuing a Revised Edition of the History, a slight sketch of the his torical progress of the writer's mind, and of the gradual way in which the plan of his work grew up, may not seem out of place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of the English People Many histories have preceded this one; many others will come after. Such is the charm of the subject that volunteers will never be lacking to undertake this journey, so hard, so delightful too. As years go on, the journey lengthens: wider grows the field, further advance the seekers, and from the top of unexplored headlands, through morning mists, they descry the outlines of countries till then unknown. They must be followed to realms beyond the grave, to the silent domains of the dead, across barren moors and frozen fens, among chill rushes and briars that never blossom, till those Edens of poetry are reached, the echoes of which, by a gift of fairies or of muses, still vibrate to the melody of voices long since hushed. More has been done during the last fifty years to shed light on the origins than in all the rest of modern times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of the English People, Vol. 2: From the Renaissance to the Civil War I Such were, with many others, the sights which the Theatre of the World offered to the wondering and delighted inhabitants of old Europe at the time of the Renaissance. Marvels innumerable are gazed upon, and dreams innumerable are realised at the same moment. Antique predictions are fulfilled; Thule is no longer the limit of the world; the gods descend from Olympus and live again among men; the cult of beauty spreads; flowers cover the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature, Vol. 1 of 2 Among the last acts of his life were his reading of my ms., and his instructions to his colleague about some alterations or kindly suggestions for the improvement of my text. But almost all the changes my version experienced were practically made by his own hand. In this paternal oversight I have cause for self-congratulation, for not every translator is so fortunate. I also received Professor Ten Brink's authority to make enlargements, extra foot-notes, a new arrangement of the paragraphs, or whatever else I might consider helpful in bring ing the work more closely home to his English and American readers, on whose appreciation he set great value. But I have naturally refrained from making much use of such flattering confidence; any changes or additions are duly noted where they occur. Besides the author's critical revision of my text, many of the proof sheets have been read by experienced students of English Literature, which has frequently resulted in a greater clearness of diction.
