Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles of the Indian Mutiny] By 1857, British power in India had been largely undisputed for almost fifty years, however, the armies of the East India Company were largely recruited from the native people of India. But in 1858 the Sepoy soldiers turned against their erstwhile British employers. The events that led up to the Revolt were many and varied, including British highhandedness, ignorance of local customs and religious values, and incendiary propaganda. It is generally argued that the spark that lit the flame was the rumour that the newly issued rifle cartridges would be greased either with tallow, derived from beef and thereby offensive to Hindus, or lard, derived from pork and thereby offensive to Muslims. The enraged soldiers mutinied across a number of Indian States, taking Delhi, besieging Lucknow, and revolting in Oudh. In the middle of these tumultuous events was Ruth Coopland, wife of Rev. Coopland who had been sent to the important city of Agra some in Gwalior. Her world shattered as the news of the uprising of the Sepoys spread. Her own household servants became sullen, aggressive and possibly murderous; she recounts how the atmosphere began to heat up as rumours of slaughters abounded. Finally the clouds broke; the rebellion finally reached Gwalior and anyone British was a target for cold-blooded murder, her husband was killed in the initial stages of the fighting and as rioting carried on she made good here escape in the company of other women. Her travails only increased as she attempted to escape to the fort at Agra which she describes in all of its perilous details along with the grim struggle to stay alive in the fort. Having survived all of the brutalities of India she returned to England where she was determined that her story, as an exemplar of the larger suffering, should be made know to the public.

Book excerpt: Nightmare experiences in a land torn apart by violence, mutiny, betrayal and war The British travelled to live in India throughout the years of the Empire. It was always an adventure, a journey to an unknown, exotic, alien and sensuous sub-continent. In was in that spirit that Mrs Coopland in company with her Reverend husband first set foot in Calcutta. Little did they realise that the strangeness of their new home would be the very least of their experiences. The Coopland's were bound for Gwalior in North Central India where he would take up a living in the shadow of one of the largest and most formidable fortresses in Hindustan. All too soon rumours of mutiny within the ranks of the sepoy army spread through the land and the Coopland's and their neighbours were gripped with palpable fear as rumour became fact as one night the conflagration swept over them and all of Gwalior in its appalling blood red terror. This is an astonishing story of suffering, endurance and survival by a gentlewoman set adrift in a maelstrom of violence far from home. Mrs Coopland's tension filled experiences make gripping reading throughout and her account cannot be recommended too highly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional analyses of nineteenth-century politics have assigned women a peripheral role. By adopting a broader interpretation of political participation, the author identifies how middle-class women were able to contribute to political affairs in the nineteenth century. Examining the contribution that women made to British political life in the period 1800-1870 stimulates debates about gender and politics, the nature of authority and the definition of political culture. This volume examines female engagement in both traditional and unconventional political arenas, including female sociability, salons, child-rearing and education, health, consumption, religious reform and nationalism. Richardson focuses on middle-class women’s social, cultural, intellectual and political authority, as implemented by a range of public figures and lesser-known campaigners. The activists discussed and their varying political, economic and religious backgrounds will demonstrate the significance of female interventions in shaping the political culture of the period and beyond.
