Book excerpt: A is for Anchor is a delightful illustrated alphabet inspired by classic images from traditional Western tattoo designs. Written and illustrated by renowned tattoo artist Paul Slifer, the book combines his love for classic tattoo art with his interest in children's books, which was piqued when he became the father of two girls. Painted in the traditional "flash" style of tattoo design making, this book was designed to appeal to parents looking for a different type of alphabet book for their children as well as fans of tattoo art and illustrated books. With its retro, folk art charm and engaging verse, A is for Anchor is a playful book which celebrates a venerable artistic heritage in a new innovative way. You can also make the book part of your decor with a special alphabet poster included with each book. Great for all ages.

They strive to become an emotional or intellectual cargo that might accompany us wherever, or however, we go. . . . If we are made by what we read, if language truly builds people into what they are, how they think, the depth with which they feel, then these stories are, to me, premium material for that construction project. You could build a civilization with them.” —Ben Marcus, from the Introduction Award-winning author of Notable American Women Ben Marcus brings us this engaging and comprehensive collection of short stories that explore the stylistic variety of the medium in America today. Book excerpt: An anchor holds a boat steady, keeps it in place, stops it from drifting away. What holds us steady when life gets hard? What are we anchored to? These are the questions I was thinking about as I put this book together. My heart is that these words will bring you hope and peace as you read them. 'Abbie has such a gift when it comes to words. As I read through her book for the first time, I found myself feeling a whole range of emotions. I felt seen and known, I felt affirmed and comforted, and I felt hope rising in my heart. This is a book to take your time over. Don't rush through each poem. Instead, sit with the words and let the truth really impact your heart and mind. In a world where so much is changing all the time, this book is full of inspiration and hope to anchor your soul. I am so proud of Abbie for the many hours she has given to producing this book. I know that the words within it will have a deep and profound effect on many people's lives. I pray you will enjoy the journey.' Wendy Mann // wendymannequip.com // Author of Naturally Supernatural and Leading as Sons and Daughters 'I'm not sure if this is a term or not, but somehow it seems to sum up what this book is full of and it's creative wisdom. The words Abbie chooses and the way she uses them is beautiful. This is the sort of book that you want to keep by the side of your bed to read a page a night or when you wake up in the morning. Anchor really will take you to somewhere deeper and you'll really be richer for reading it.' Book excerpt: Soil Reinforcement for Anchor Plates and Uplift Response presents a comprehensive and rigorous review of the current knowledge in soil improvement for anchor plates, and is based on original research that includes experimental data on how to enhance uplift response of soil anchor plates by using several soil reinforcement methods. Divided into 6 chapters, the author makes an introduction to both Ancho Plates and Soil Reinforcement in chapter one, then providing a comprehensive literature review on the topic in chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents how the experiment was set up, the different types of geotextiles used, and the types of soil tested. Chapter 4 presents experimental data, along with data provided by simulation softwares, including Plaxis. Chapter 5 compares the experimental results to the numerical simulation data, providing researchers and geotechnical engineers with tools they can apply to their own projects. In chapter 6, the author presents his conclusions and recommendations on the usage of soil reinforcement to maximize uplift response to anchor plates. Researchers in geotechnical engineering can use the methods and experimental data presented in the book on their own projects, and practicing engineers will benefit from the comparisons between experimental and simulation data provided to make appropriate selection of soil reinforcement techniques that can be applied to their projects. Presents techniques for improving uplift response by 40% or more Discusses the uplift capacity of symmetrical anchor plates in several scenarios Provides a complete review of soil reinforcement for anchor plates Includes numerical analyses methods for validating experimental test results

This book was released on 1998 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rehabilitation of civil works hydraulic concrete structures such as navigation locks or stilling basins commonly involves the removal of defective concrete and replacement with new concrete. Steel reinforcing anchors are normally embedded into the base concrete to assist in the attachment of the base concrete to the new concrete. With respect to bonding the steel anchors into the base concrete, this investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of cementitious, vinylester and epoxy grouts in bonding embedment of the anchors. Tensile pullout and long-term creep strain tests were accomplished in this study in correlation with parameters for dry and wet environments and for bond maturity ages of 1, 3,7, and 28 days and 1 year. Tests results indicated all of the grout materials developed sufficient bond strength in pullout and creep tests for dry applications, with the exception of one epoxy material. However, for submerged applications, the epoxy grouts exhibited poor developed bond strength in both pullout and creep tests. As a result, particular caution is recommended for the application of epoxy grouts to embed steel anchors in hardened concrete under submerged conditions.

Book excerpt: Prepared by theØTask Committee on Wind-Induced Forces and Task Committee on Anchor Bolt Design of the Petrochemical Committee of the Energy Division of ASCE. This report presents state-of-the-practice set of guidelines for the determination of wind-induced forces and the design of anchor bolts for petrochemical facilities. Current codes and standards do not address many of the structures found in the petrochemical industry. As a result, engineers and petrochemical companies have independently developed procedures and techniques for handling engineering issues such as the twoØcontained in this report. A lack of standardization in the industry has led to inconsistent structural reliability, however. This volume is intended for structural design engineers familiar with design of industrial-type structures.
