This book was released on 2013 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New essays on the unjustly neglected Pèlerinage works by de Guileville, showing in particular its huge contemporary influence. The fourteenth-century French pilgrimage allegories of Guillaume de Deguileville (or "Digulleville") shaped late medieval and early modern European culture. Portions of the Pèlerinage de Vie Humaine, Pèlerinage de l'Ame and Pèlerinage de Jhesucrist survive in more than eighty medieval manuscripts and translations into English, German, Dutch, Castilian and Latin appeared by the early sixteenth century, along with adaptations into Frenchprose and dramatic forms and numerous early printed editions. This volume furnishes a better understanding of the allegories' circulation, creation and importance from the 1330s into the 1560s, via trans-national, multilingual and interdisciplinary perspectives. The collection's first section, on "Tradition", identifies the patterns that developed as Deguileville's corpus captured the attentions of adaptors, annotators and illustrators. The second section, on "Authority", addresses the cultural context of Deguileville himself, his approach to poetic craft and the status of his French and Latin poetry. The third section, on "Influence", closely examines selected connections between the Pèlerinages and the literary productions of later authors, translators and reading communities, including the French verse of Philippe de Mézières, Castilian print adaptation, and the early modern Croatian novel.Overall, the collection provides a variety of approaches to examining literary reception, attending not only to texts but also to evidence of surviving manuscripts and early printed editions; it offers new insights into a rich and complex allegorical corpus and its impact on European literary history. Marco Nievergelt is a Maître-Assistant in Early English Literature in the English department of the University of Lausanne.Stephanie A. Viereck Gibbs Kamath studies English and French medieval literature, with a particular interest in allegory, translation studies, and the history of the material text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcus Marulus or Marko MaruliAe (1450-1524) is known as the Father of Croatian Literature and as the first Croatian Bible scholar. Much of his literary work is inspired by his study of the Sacred Scriptures. This book is an introduction to Marulus' central religious matrix, the Latin Bible, and his use of it. We are fortunate to have access to Marulus' desk copy of the Biblia Latina in four volumes, with introductions and commentaries that customarily accompanied the Bibles in the fifteenth century. This book is the first ever to investigate Marulus' biblical hermeneutics, and it lays the groundwork for further literary and theological studies on Marulus and his time. The book is accompanied by a DVD of the four volumes of the Biblia Latina of 1489 with Marulus' handwritten marginalia.

They focus on what Marulus and Martin Luther have in common; on Marulus’s Carmen, “Christ Speaking from the Cross”; on his metaphors for “empires” in his Latin works and in comparison with the contemporary German Humanist Ulrich von Hutten; on Marulus’s open letter to the pope; on his reading of the four volumes of the illustrated Biblia Latina and samples of the marginalia which he entered; on his understanding of the “Rock” in Matthew 16:18; on the “Tree of the Cross” and other early Latin poetry; and on his view of Christian-Muslim relations.

Book excerpt: The present volume presents some of the latest research trends in the study of Late Antiquity in the Eastern Roman Empire from a multi-disciplinary perspective, encompassing not only social, economic and political history, but also philology, philosophy and legal history. The volume focuses on the interaction between the periphery and the core of the Eastern Empire, and the relations between Eastern Romans and Barbarians in various geographic areas, during the approximate millennium that elapsed between the Fall of Rome and the Fall of Constantinople, paying special attention to the earliest period. By introducing the reader to some innovative and ground-breaking recent theories, the contributors to the present volume, an attractive combination of leading scholars in their respective fields and promising young researchers, offer a fresh and thought-provoking examination of Byzantium during Late Antiquity and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most dictionaries have forerunners, and all have imitators; an understanding of the historical foundations of dictionary-making is therefore one of the preconditions of further progress in academic lexicography. The papers in this volume, which were presented at the 1986 Exeter Seminar, survey most of the lexicographical traditions in the world, some tracing them right back to their beginnings. The programme was divided into eight sessions, with the following concentrations of topics: (1) three classical traditions, (2) the early history of European lexicography, (3) the beginnings of English lexicography, (4) further aspects of English lexicography, (5) the background of diverse national developments, (6) specific features of national developments, (7) pioneers of three genres, (8) recent trends in the English dictionary.
